@mono Yes, this is why every person needs to ask themselves what is the most logical. Do I think that the universe and all that's in it was spontaneously formed out of nothing? Could the great deal of order and complexity in the universe have been formed out of complete chaos? And if so what does this mean for me? Is there no purpose to my existence? Or do I believe there was a designer behind everything that exists? Do I believe I was created for a purpose?
If you agree that the universe could be "result of something intelligent" why not God? I think most of us simply want an ambiguous force instead of God, impersonal, something that requires no commitment to believe in. We want to live our lives the way we see fit. Which is why I believe many people cant be "tied down" to believe in a personal God.

I'm not getting into this, its pointless, but suffice to say that the bashing of scientific knowledge in these threads is astounding. The bonkers position of faith being in some way the thing which needs to be disproved here, something which is in any way backed up is staggeringly, eye poppingly insane.

in situations like this the only appropriate thing left to do is this: http://www.qbn.com/topics/583707…

Thing is chaps, there will *always* be gaps in scientific knowledge and some people will *always* fill them with gods, no matter what else we know about the universe. Until it all reaches whatever point it folds back into itself and everything "starts" again.

I'm not sure I'd consider designbot an imbecile kelpie, that's a bit harsh. He's entitled to different conclusions than you.

so you are admitting to gaps in scientific knowledge, especially in regards to the origin of the universe?
So how can you possibly make the claim that the theistic claim is bogus? my only point was if you are going to come in and say things like "the bonkers position of faith being in some way the thing which needs to be disproved here, something which is in any way backed up is staggeringly, eye poppingly insane"
Then you must have the absolute truth from which you can make such assertions. After you could not know the theistic view was "insane" unless you had the truth.

@designbot : ok, one post and then I'm out. I've been in hundreds of these over the years and I try not to get into it any more.
Science never ever talks about absolute fact, there is no concept of absolute fact in science. That is built into the process. You guys do though, that is a the point of faith. You have no empirical evidence for your position yet you promote it as absolute fact. Well, whatever, I don;t really give a monkeys. You are wrong. I say wrong, because this is the position you take, because you are not engaging with and accepting the body of scientific progress yet also keeping an open mind as regards the remaining black spots in the pattern on show. Your faith means you take this position of absolute fact.
You extrapolate the existence of an almighty creator from the gaps, most people post-enlightenment (and I'm sorry if those terms hurt your feelings, but that is the situation here) would extrapolate the likelihood of at some point discovering a physical explanation from the rest of the body of knowledge, and from the really quite stunning progress we have made in science since the church let go of its grip on education and knowledge.
Its this extrapolation I find insane. You see gaps and claim validation for something which is based in mythology and magic, which has never been and will (most likely) never be observed or tested or quantified.
And you expect us to do the running here? nonsense
because I'm actually a nice guy I will apologise for calling you an imbecile though, that was unfair.
ok, that's me out. Much love gramme, I wish these threads wouldn't keep coming up.

^I'm over it, thanks for the apology.
The only point I will make is this...science does the exact same thing you are claiming. It makes absolute facts. It does this by refuting religion and stating how "impossible" the idea of God is. Like above, if you claim something to be "false" you must have absolute knowledge or truth to know this. By the laws of logic, you could not know anything to be false unless you were coming from a position where you held absolute truth.
"there is no concept of absolute fact in science" is that an absolute fact of science? These claims are always completely flawed as they are self-defeating. Sorry mate.
I'm out as well. Peace.

I knew something with Jesus in the title would end up like this.
There's obviously gotta be a first mover somewhere. Call it God or the Universe or the source of Life, it's pretty weird if you can't admit there is something way beyond our comprehension going on. And the fact that you are here right now on this planet is totally amazing and I love thinking about that. We could just as easily not be here at all.
Just enjoy life and love each other even if people believe different things. We're all in this together and we are more amazing than any scientist can describe. No-one can explain what actually is making us tick.
