After 1 hour with PS CS4 I am about to roll back to my trusty CS2!
Can anyone tell me how I stop files from opening in a tab, this annoys the shit out of me.
I just want them to open in their own window like the good old days.

The tabs are utter bullshit, fucking horrible kludge thrown together to fix the bullshit MDI interface on Windows but wrongly added to the Mac version.
Preferences > Interface > Panels & Documents >
Turn off "Open Documents as Tabs"
Turn off "Enable Floating Document Window Docking"- Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.CyBrain
- OMG>..thank you too...that shit was bugging me !DanaScully

Couldn't agree more. load of shit.
this method fixed it, thanks. I looked for it earlier but like all new features they hide the "turn off" button.
thanks for help.

It's not bullshit, it's something Macromedia included many years ago and now it's considered a new feature.
- hah. came years ago, now a new feature. isn't that brilliant! lol.akrokdesign
- you're right it's not bullshit, it's horseshit.squish

Duh, should they write all over it "actually Macromedia invented this"? The tabs annoy the hell out of me too (thx for the fix) but get real

tabs works wonderful in windows but the transparent taskbar/window system in osx makes it abit flawed. especially while zooming in windows. the whole shit shrinks, window and all rather than just the image in the workspace

That's why I still use CS for most of my work.

I just downgraded to cs3. Open GL sux and refresh is extremely slow

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE YOU WORKING AS A DESIGNER 20 YEARS AGO WHEN THERE WASN'T PHOTOSHOP.
What you need is a WHAMBULANCE TAB. WAAAAAAaaaaaaa
- You sound like an old teacher..."back in my day, we had to walk uphill in 6ft of snow both ways, and we used knives fashioned from soup can lids and lettraset."
Get over it.squish - And you had to walk uphill both ways in 6ft of snow...get over it.squish

glad I never got CS4, now that I think of it I don't think I've even got a CS4 file from anyone yet.

First thing to do after installing a new version is to go through preferences - you would have found the tab switch there, had you done that.
CS4 layout is very configurable in that respect - you can use tabs, no tabs, launch in tabs and detach each one manually.. it still lacks dragging stuff among spring-loaded tabs though. You have to detach tabs to drag-copy layer to another open document.
The "application frame" setting to make photoshop look windows-like is fantastic. Finally, you can get rid of the distracting desktop and other application windows.- I have already Turned off "Open Documents as Tabs" and "Enable floating Document Window Docking" but this does not solve the issue of documents opening up maximized as a tabbed window (which is my biggest beef), this is especially annoying when "undocking" the first open document and then dragging a second document into PS. The second document opens up maximized as a tabbed window, BEHIND the floating document, which was opened first.
Plus floating documents, "float" over all docked panels, such as the tools and options panels. The documents even float over the application toolbar (file, edit, image, etc)PHA - drag the item over the tab, it'll then open the document and u can place itAkiraprise

I CALL BS. windows like = BS CRAP
- You don't have to turn it on, ffs.
I missed it ever since I switched from Windows. I don't like changes to top bar though.raf

So far CS4 seems pretty good. The only thing that REALLY annoys me is that with OpenGL drawing turned on, guides are fuzzy, as if they're not locking to the pixel, but smudged in between. I've turned off the OpenGL feature.
- Agreed. It really needs to be precise not the shodddy OpenGL blurryness. I think it might be a bug?MSL
