If you just want to grab files, you could use Apple File Sharing, nothing else needed, to mount your remote Mac's hard drive on your desktop (plus any attached drives).
Go Connect to Server > afp://(ip address):548
You need to turn on file sharing and if your Mac is on a LAN at home, set port forwarding of port 548 in your router to point at your Mac

You need to set up your Mac as VNC server and then use a VNC client app to connect. These are a couple of link that could help you understand how to do it.

http://www.macminicolo.net/Mac_V…You will need an application called Chicken of the VNC to connect to your mac (http://sourceforge.net/projects...
Try it, it should work just fine.

I have no idea of the terminology and have no idea of tehnical hence why a search has turned up nothing.
I want to be able to connect to my Mac at home if, for example, I have left some files there. Is there an easy and Cheap (pref free :) why of doing this?
I have heard the words/letters VNC and VPN but do not know the difference and if it is right for me.
