*** NEW SECRET POLITICAL THREAD ***

  • PonyBoy0

    shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

  • TheBlueOne0

Open question: Do you think the republicans have overplayed their opposition to healthcare reform - in terms of style and execution (i.e. lead off with the crazed, gun toting, not connected to reality folks) - in such a way that only invites a hard pushback from supporters? I think we're starting to see this now. The fact that Obama IS popular, with a dem majority in both houses, might have this particular mode used by the republicans backfire on them? What if they made a more rationalized measured opposition?

In looking at the more independent polling, these town hall protests haven't done much if anything to swing anyone in the independent middle their way.

    • Or we don't have to discuss this at all..just throwing it out there.TheBlueOne

"bingo my ass. Close the fucking borders you liberal twats."
    - AngryMob

I so wanted to say "Wish we closed the borders in 1968 so your immigrant ass wouldn't be here, fuckstick". But I refrained. Mainly bc I'm not like that, but he makes me sooo want to be.

Oh and Rick, as for the specific provision in the bill about covering illegals?

EC. 152. PROHIBITING DISCRIMINATION IN HEALTH CARE.
"... [A]ll health care and related services (including insurance coverage and public health activities) covered by this Act shall be provided without regard to personal characteristics extraneous to the provision of high quality health care or related services."

The word "free" isn't in there. It just means that no one can be denied insurance coverage or health care because of their looks, or because they're wearing robes or a burqa. But nothing in there says undocumented immigrants will be able to scam "free" health care. In other words, you can only call that a lie.

  • DrBombay0

Ahh gotcha. I am going to continue to call him "Wilhelm"!

As Americans I think we are just so disconnected with reality in terms of the costs of health care. This became increasingly clear to me after a recent incident...

I just had to got to the doctor a few weeks ago for sinus issues. Doctor asked me a few questions looked in my nose/ears....sent me out the door with an antibiotic prescription. Interestingly enough by accident I gave the doctors office my old insurance card. So a few days ago I got a bill in the mail.....$150! Doesn't it seem a little bit expensive to be paying $150 for a 2 minute office visit? If you do the math that's like $4,500/hr.

Now granted I probably won't end up paying anything out of pocket (just need to sent them my new insurance info) but never the less what has happened in this country? Why the hell is everything related to health care so expensive? I've been in the boat of having no insurance when I needed it the most. I've shared my story in the politics thread in the past. I'm all for doctors making a large and well deserved income, but at some point we have to cut it off.

So needless to say as much as you guys might think I'm only for free market/private health care....I completely see the need for reform.

I guess this is more ranting than offering any real solutions. I'm completely willing to admit I don't know what the answer is. I still do think tort reform could help significantly but alone it'll be futile. The lawsuits are still out of control though, and no doubt the insurance coverage needed by doctors and associated cost is passed onto to us (the patients). There's certainly a host of things that need to happen in tandem. Government run health care? dunno....I remain very skeptical. A few things are certain though, health care costs need to be cut dramatically...and everyone should have access to affordable health care. ( I know I'm preaching to the choir and stating the obvious )

    • If you add the cost of the prescription, we end up well over $200. All to be treated for a simple sinus infection.designbot
    • The lawsuits aren't as big an issue as they're made out to be.TheBlueOne

Nice work. I'm waiting for that GetRefresh guy to start bumping the other thread.

    "Where'd everyone go?"

    "Hey guys...."

    @designbot

I know what you mean. Last year I completely tore my ACL in my knee. Luckily I had coverage, and the operation was covered basically in full, but the surgery cost was around $85,000. And that was so I could essentially walk again without my knee sliding apart (not a feeling I recommend). Of course the key to a successful operation like that is not just a good surgeon but also about six to eight months of some pretty hardcore physical rehab. I had to fight with my insurance coverage to get beyond the bare minimum after eight weeks, and basically covered two months out of pocket - 3 sessions a week at $80 bucks each..so it added up quick.

I mentioned this in the politics thread and our resident dickhead basically said "oh boo hoo hoo"...well fuck this retard. Like I said I was lucky that I had insurance and I have enough money to cover this shit now.

Eight years ago I had surgery on my other knee for torn cartiledge and had bare minimum coverage. I ended up getting hit with $15 grand for that, and ended up in bankruptcy because of that (on top of a business I was involved in with a friend went south, leaving me holding the bag on that as well). I was lucky that I was a single guy with little overhead and no family or wife depending on me. And that the injury was just a one time thing I mean I recovered from that financially now where I am in great shape, but it was the worst period of my life.

I can't imagine being seriously chronically ill with diabetes or cancer or whatever and having to eat those bills without insurance, or if your kid gets sick and you have no coverage. It's just insane.

I'm not saying I'm totally down with Obama's plan here, but SOMETHING needs to be done here, and this fear mongering and intimidation is just so dysfunctional - kind of tells me our political culture is very sick.

And just this week I'm reading about how some of these republican operatives are saying "Oh, look out for the democrats to scare you with this made up swine flu scare this fall." I'm incredulous. It's not a scare. It's a very real, reality based concern. My wife is a doctor and she gets CDC email updates on this shit and it's fucking scary. My wife will be going into her third trimester at the same time this flu will be revving up again this fall, and 9% of the total fatalities of this strain so far are pregnant women, mostly all in the third trimester. And given the fact that she is also a health care worker it doubles her risk of exposure..so it's very personal and very concerning to me and to see dicktards in the media twist this for political capital just disgusts me.

Anyway, as a word of advice, take care of your knees :)

You know what stands out in this debate is that not only do we not agree on the solutions, we don't even have anything close to the same preconceptions in terms of what the government is trying to do. Even though I hated Bush I felt like I always knew what his motivations were, even if they were the most vile shit imaginable you kind of understood the reasons behind what he did.

Now depending on where you sit in the political spectrum, your view of the current government could range anywhere from

    1) Obama is a far-left radical determined to move the U.S. government into socialism.

    2) Obama is a progressive Democrat who wants health care with a public option, negotiating in good faith with a more conservative Congress. He might make some compromises out of practicality, but in the end, he's doing this all to advance a mainstream progressive-left (not far left) agenda.

    3) Obama is a corporate Democrat sellout to the health care lobby (among other lobbies) who now make up the money base of the Democratic party, and will almost certainly move to strip the "public option" out of any final bill.

    4) Obama is a complete puppet of the ruling class, and it doesn't matter who's in the government, the keys to the castle just get handed from GWB to Obama and nothing changes.

Now (1) seems out of the question to me. It's definitely true that Obama was on the actual left when he was younger (see: Rev Wright and some of the causes he advocated for when he was in Illionois state politics), but like most politicians he's moderated those views to gain and maintain power.

#4, likewise, seems too simplistic and unlikely to me. Why would opponents of the liberals be spending millions of dollars and organizing grassroots campaigns to whip up anger if it didn't matter who was in power?

When I voted for Obama and advocated for him on the campaign, I was hoping he was going to turn out more like the second option in that list. I've never been on the far left, and I just hoped the government would clean up the mess left by the Republicans and enact some smart reforms in terms of the environment and health care. At the same time, and especially lately, there were always worrying signs that he was more like #3.

Maybe the most ominous sign of this is the activity of Tom Daschle, who was always a key part of making Obama a credible force in politics, advocating on the part of the health care industry and collecting hundreds of thousands in speaking fees while Obama was running for president. If you recall Dashcle was actually Obama's choice to be the Health and Human Services Secretary before he was suddenly forced to refuse the nomination (and it's still not entirely clear why).

In recent weeks, we have been hearing a lot of "the public option is dispensible" and "we were never all that big on the public option." It seems remarkably dumb to go into final negotiations talking down the public option if you were actually trying to get it in there.

I think what happens with the health care bill in the end will say a lot about what we can expect from Obama in the next three years. If the younger generation of progressives are completely betrayed by the Democrats, they are definitely going to start looking around at other ways to influence the government.

    • I always saw O as a moderate centrist with lefty rhetoric...TheBlueOne
    • I'm actually surprised only in that he seems more centrist than I expected...TheBlueOne
    • The fact that he's being labelled as the 2nd coming of Mao by the repubs just points out how out of touch they areTheBlueOne

Interesting article on how the private employer-based system of insurance is tanking and how Obama's plan could actually be a godsend for them.

I've just realized that without Blueone around, that this thread is officially a fucking bore. Frequented by fucking morons with IQs less than 50, the classic cliche, "you don't know what you've lot until it's gone", lives on in this thread.

Therefore, although I may continue to lurk, this WILLL be my last post until BlueOne returns, if ever.

Until then, to everyone here, I strongly suggest that you go back, study hard and receive your high school education, as it's never too late.

And remember, as we near Obama's 1 year anniversary as President of The United States, that he has still yet to accomplish jack shit. Natha... squat... dick.

Take care of yourselves, and remember that your all a bunch of O-BAAAHHH-MAAA sheep, and losers of the worst kind.
