Canon EF 24 - 70 mm F2.8 L USM. better than the
Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM?

^^ Not better, just more versatile. If you're shooting tabletop the fifty might be to long (80mm on your camera) depending on how big your shooting space is. Also consider to Sigma or Tamron versions of the 24-70 f2.8, they're less than half the price of the Canon version, and pretty good optically.

The Canon EF 24 - 70 mm F2.8 L USM
Is it similar to what I have now,17-85mm,
but FAST so I can do very narrow depth of field?

I mean you do realize that there are other lens manufacturers that make lenses for Canon cameras, right?

does anyone else hear good things about the 24-105? i know it's f/4, and that would bother me a little, but it's an L lens (image stabilization). mostly a photojay lens, i thought, but it has pretty awesome reviews on B&H.

I have a 24-70L and its great, but its great becuase its good when you cannot control your environment such as at events etc. Its a brilliant range on a full frame camera like a 5d/1ds but on a 40D its not going to be wide enough to make a good all round walk around lens.
I would work out what it is you want to focus on.
Portraits? then buy the 85L, 135L, 200L or 70-200L.
Weddings? 24-70L, 50mm L, 70-200L
Product shots? 60mm f2.8 Macro, 100mm f2.8 Macro
Landscape stitching? 50mmL
Interiors/enclosed areas and landscapes? 10-22mmbuying a good all rounder is going to be hard with a 40D, your 17-85 is probably pretty decent for this. If you purely want to look like a pro and wear out your arms? get the 24-70L, its a beast.
There is a lens for every situation but you should put a lot of thought into your lighting, lighting is key.
