You can have some fun with the 50mm 1.2 L Lens. Beautiful DOF. Also the 24mm 1.4 L II Lens gives you a nice wide angle with a fast lens.

The L lenses are nice but costly. I recommend the Canon 50mm 1.4 or the 50mm 1.8 if on a budget. Both are very nice optically—the 1.4 is just over $300 and the 1.8 is below $100. Check out: http://www.the-digital-picture.c… for good info/reviews. Enjoy!

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens
- Very tight shooting with the 100mm, but you get the macro.dibec
- I was looking at that one!
(good reviews .... only saw shots of bugs and flowers

The 100mm 2.8 is tight indeed. I'd recommend the 60mm macro for its ease of use.

I want a good lens. The more I look - the more overwhelmed I get.
I was originally looking at the 90mm 2.8 (tilt) = too expensive
Then the 100mm 2.8(Then I got sidetracked and Now I want the 85mm 1.2 for portrait)
I think around 1000 max for end of year tax thing

Slrgear.com and photozone.de are great places to do research. But hopefully dibec will be backed-up by sikma and slappy shortly. they know their shit too.

the 85mm 1.2 L is hot. The focal length is a pain at times, esp when shooting indoors. The sharpness is just amazing. God, I love it.
The 50mm 1.2 L is just an overall amazing lens. Nice fast lens, 50 mm is just a great standard, even if you move to a full frame. Something to consider.

Agree, 50mm 1.2/1.4/1.8 FTW just depends on your budget.
but if your doing a tabletop shot you might want something wide for coverage.
look into a 28mm or 24mm.
good luck!

to only complicate matters more, minimum focus distance may be a factor too. but the lenses mentioned thus far are all relatively similar.
- xovi0
yea dont forget you have the 1.6x crop factor to put in consideration about.

for STRICTLY tabletop stuff you could get away with a nice used manual focus lens. start here: http://www.keh.com
if you don't have any lenses. you'd do well to get the cheapy kit lens (18-55 or whatever) to start. this will give you some variety to play with. you can get a better lenses down the road when you know what you need.
- I've been using my 17-85 for 6 months - time move upalicetheblue
- or autofocus. here's a nice cheap one: http://www.keh.com/O…monNom

great advice (as always;-) and great resources.I'm thinking the 50mm1.2 but am going to look into something wider, too, as suggested

probably not the best example of a bokeh effect but its where you focus on the object you want and it blurs out the background (DoF)
at the sometime giving it a really nice blurry bg, with crisp circle shapes.
- xovi0
haah ya beat me to it i'm too slow ;p

One of the best all around lens is the Canon EF 24 - 70 mm F2.8 L USM.
