hi all
Can anyone recommend a cheap nas server that works fine with mac. Prefferably being able to have 2x1tb discs. I want to be able to play music and video files on my laptop from the server.

Airport extreme / Time capsule + USB2 RAID

the price for that is a bit heavy for me.
how about this?
Thecus n299

and then just put in a 1Tb harddrive and keep one slot open for future upgrades?

Do you have a setup like that pylon? I'm about to get a Time Capsule for file storage.

@ rafalski
Yes.
Time Capsule for our machines' backup and a 2tb RAID for network storage of work files. We've got two of these: http://www.newertech.com/product… for redundant storage. One is hooked up to the TC for everyone to access. The guardian is fast and awesome as well as really quite quiet. There's no fiddly interface because it's literally just a drive. All the network connections are through the time capsule. You can get them pre-loaded w/ drives or put in your own.
We had a Western Digital mybook world (or whatever their nas is called) but it was complete garbage. SLOOOOOOOW and loud — maybe okay for consumers but not with four of us trying to spin the thing all at the same time. Seriously too slow to work with. This may have been because it was an actual NAS so we were jumping through the TC and then over to the nas via cat-5 rather than just jumping to the tc and then to the guardian via usb2. I dunno. We're going to build a fake server using the old G5 tower when we get another macpro after the holidays but given how speedy (and easy to administer) our current arrangement is we'll probably just stick with it until we really outgrow it either because of storage space or the need for a fully-featured server.

Thanks pylon.
Do you access TC via wifi? I had some hopes for the n-wifi speed, but it doesn't look that promising

We just use the wifi when we're running around with notebooks. At our desks we're plugged via gigabit which is more than fast enough for us. That said for surfing and even *normal* work-load (non-huge photoshop docs or big indesign files w/ lots of linked images) wifi is pretty fast.

I was hoping to place the TC somewhere in a corner, away from the computers and access it wirelessly, but if it's even slower than USB 2.0 alone, I'll have to reconsider it.

It's definitely slower than just plugging a USB2 or FW drive directly into your machine. But really, unless you're doing video or heavy photoshop work you won't notice much of a difference...

i just got the LaCie 5Big 5TB NAS....connects thru ethernet....seems to be great so far. set up was simple....took a day to do a bootable back up of my machine....then i'm using backblaze for online back ups...

i've had good luck with these:
http://www.netgear.com/Products/…
you can pop in additional disks and it automatically configures and stripes them so you can replace or upgrade from raid 1 to 5 or anywhere in between on the fly.

As someone else said. Drobo! I've just finished setting mine up with 2 x 1Tb drives and the ethernet share. Piece of pi55...

thnx for those who have given an serious answer.. I surely will be lookin into Drobo and readyNasDuo. Im also kind of interesed in the Thecus N299, it seems really pricey.

@spmitch
