Has anyone ever had good results when leaving about a 3mm margin around a color block when doing business cards? or are the printers almost always off?
If you did have a good result was it because you stayed on them to get the cuts right?

depends on the printer really, ask them if they can do it and let them know you're looking for strict tolerances there. they will certainly oblige you if they are able. if they can't - find a new printer!
- Good advice, definitely ring them and explain the situation.MSL

nah 3mm is too tight... i've never seen a trim that exact, nor worked with a printer who would guarantee anything closer than 5mm to trim... let alone a border.
think with a 3mm border, even if they're off the mark by 1mm, thats 2 on one side and 4 on the other which is gonna look like shit.
take your printers advice and change the design. they sometimes can be helpful that way.
- I second this. Its about accuracy and with that little to play with the chances of mistakes are high.ian

If you want a more exact cut, specify a die cut rather than a trim on a cutter. Even if it is square corners. Then you can get a TIGHT border without the typical paper cutter draw that throws of a fine edge.
