So I bit the bullet after 7 years and decided to get engaged... As we started seeing each other on a university trip to NY we were thinking of getting married over there with Central Park being the current fave choice. Be good to get an local's thoughts though? Been to any excellent weddings in NY? Details!

Hope you have some serious dough my friend.
I've been to a couple NYC weddings, nothing special, and they were hundreds of thousands.

My wife and I eloped a little over a year ago. Bought new threads, scotch, champagne, and were married on a private beach. Went out for oysters and filet later on, and spent the weekend at a bed and breakfast. Totally perfect, no hassle, fabulous memory.
Final bill was under 1k.
Think before you plan. :)

there's a great conservatory garden at 105th and 5th. I see wedding people there + photographers all the time.

Get a picture of the bridal or groom's parties running across a crosswalk in traffic on Fifth Avenue. Those pictures are cheeky.

A friend of mine got married in Shakespeare Gardens in Central Park. It was beautiful and, i think, free.

Lots of weddings at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens as well.
I've seen very small groups of a wedding in CentralPark next to a pond or where ever. You could have it anywhere. It might even be free if you don't want seats n stuff.

last time i was in central park there was a wedding going on and i politely went around but these assholes were taking up both paths... thers that water fountain in the middle of the park that people love to get photographed in... and you can get married for free or something cheap in the empire state building on valentines.

try to be as non-traditional as possible. the second people hear you're planning a wedding prices go up. my wife and I designed and hand-made our own save the date cards, invitations, table numbers, place cards and most other decorations. we had a family friend make cupcakes instead of a fancy traditional cake. I bought black suit and had only my brother as my best man in his military dress uniform (no tux rental and no large wedding party). My wife found a vintage dress and paid a few dollars for alterations which came out way cheaper than a traditional wedding dress.
it's about your day, not about what your everyone expects to see at a wedding. have fun with it.
