Thanks for all the feedback. I have been scanning B&W negatives as reflective positives and inverting the image with software as a side-step, but the quality just isn't there. I probably should just get in the habit of having a lab do it.
These recommendations look great and back-up what little research I have done so far. I fear that I probably can't afford any right now, but maybe I will be able to find a good deal somewhere.

I have a Microtek..they are nice if you get one that scans negatives underneath the flat bed-no glass but you have to make sure the neg stays flat

Cheap and 4x5 is like mixing oil and water. I would avoid the headache and get a lab to do it for you.

and they are getting cheaper...I paid over $550 for the i9000

I have an ancient scsi leafscanner, it was great, but it's hooked up to an old system 9 iMac so I can't even remember how to use it

stick with epson. I have this one and it does an awesome job
