Well whatever the opinions on the logo, I love these threads. This place turns into such a pit of effete lisping bullies, its hilarious ;)
- hahahaha, so true - this is why I have such little care for design these days - I mean, it's just not that important, is it?Nairn
- (a pretty terrible PoV for a so-called 'designer', I appreciate)Nairn
- only to other designers...neue75_bold
- Fuck you both!uncle_helv
- yeah!neue75_bold
- k, not true, photogs, architects and teh gays also appreciate it...neue75_bold
- No offence intended.
My entire life is wholly unimportant.Nairn

It's amazing how little time we all take before making a judgement these days.
To be honest I'm terrible for it, I have such a short attention span it takes about 3 seconds to digest and dislike most things now.
At least back on dialup I had to wait 17 minutes for a logo to load up so I took my time.

I don't see the need for a re-brand so soon after Spin (2002), I mean 6 years is f*ck all, especially when you look at the other institutions, C4, BBC, and I'm sure itv only re-branded to step away from the mess the itvDigital collapse caused.
To me it shows that the channel is struggling to workout what it is? and this is reflected in it's current output (a shoddy version of Top Gear, Home & Away, Neighbours and an engineering show presented by Rimmer from Red Dwarf) So I perhaps understand why they might look to change, to avoid been totally left behind and to try show it was still relevant amongst the vast amount of digital TV channels out there.
Compare it to Channel 4 who continually seem to get it right, and have IMO raised the bar with their on-air spots and E4 etc, and BBC have have even recently trying something different which I don't really like (dancing hippos etc) but I felt there was enough character in what they had to keep it looking fresh!! yes change their approach, get new innovative directors in, but the logo was fine, I don't think they have made an improvement, with this re-brand, unless their content/output improves!!!
- ...but much as we love channel 4's branding...they are in dire trouble. Maybe Five is re-aligning itself to a lower common denominatorbabaganush
- common denominator...FUCKbabaganush
- Fuck for the overspill of text not calling you a fuck haha :)babaganush

it's time to move away a little from all the helvetica adoration.

saw the live action idents last evening.
reminding me of washing powder graphics.- That's exactly what my wife said, she isn't a designer but I took this debate home with me!!uncle_helv
- i'm not your wife but am a graphic designer. deep.mistermik
- I'm sure you broached the subject with utmost impartiality helve ;Pkelpie
- Hahaha kelpie, there was actually no need she had seen them already, as she watches Home & Away (on series link) but she would normally go out of her way to disagree with me!uncle_helv
- ...but she would normally go out of her way to disagree with me!!!uncle_helv

I dunno - I found it pretty bland. Helvetica is ubiquitous because it works (usually)
uncle_helv - spot on mate - I think you're right in that they are trying to figure out what it is they are as a brand. First Five, then FiveUS, etc...
Kind of makes one nostalgic for the days of the soft porn, doesn't it?
- moamoa0
- word. the new logo is boring and looks like a cheap sportswear-brandpascii
- I don't see the station there, and you don't even have it, are you sure you understand the 'client'?kelpie
- (you being in germany I mean of course) surely this is just aesthetic choice, opinion on what 'looks better'kelpie
- no I don´t think I understand the client,you think a bad commercial content need a bad commercial logo?moamoa
- I'd be surprised if either of you guys have the first clue about 5, about what it is and where it wants to bekelpie
- ok its not that bad, but it could be much bettermoamoa
- kelpie's got shares in 5. word.mistermik
- yeah and they're fuckin' tanking! damn american bankers!kelpie

The new logo is good, it represents so much more than just a circle the circle is the lid on the channel it is the door to the channels contents, behind the circle you have great television, at least this is what I would think the designers were going for.
Unfortunatly the same shit happened with rybo when he put some text in a circle and everyone including me slated it, reason being is that five has a history it has recognition and there is thought behind the process.- give it 2 weeks and it will be in subconscious. Confucius. I like it.mistermik

I think you nailed it earlier Helv, but I take the opposite view.
5 was last to emerge of the terrestrial channels and has had difficulty cementing its position as a peer of those other 4 over the last 10 or so years. From the get go it didn't have the leg up or mandate of 4, or the revenue and bedded in position of ITV (which is struggling itself, regardless), or the history, license fee money, or institutional status of the BBC. The Spin redesign struck me at the time as an attempt to elevate its status through a rebrand because they weren't able to elevate the content. To be honest, lovely looking as it was, the Spin ID always sat as kind of incongruous to the what the channel were actually offering.
Now everything has changed in the last 5 years, everything, as digital has taken hold and there are now many more channels of similar standard competing with 5. Not with the others, who have their own digital networks of channels and a more solid position with the viewers anyway. but your Dave's and UK TV Historys, the new one Watch or whatever; these are all new channels and new brands muscling in on 5 in particular. This means that the old Spin ID is in desperate need of being redone so that 5 can position themselves as a superior offering to the new digital channels, rather than an inferior offering to the old terrestrial channels, with a BRAND NEW LOOK!!!!11111!!!!!!!! which directly competes with these others.
For me, even though I agree on its *form* being less attractive than the old, the new logo puts them in the right place to be in relation to the new digital channels, and allows them to spend their greater cash on getting a bigger share of the now more spread out viewership.
Also, sorry, but I think a lot of people are looking at the beautiful old brochures, the simplified modernist style, the nice wall prints etc etc and judging this on the purely aesthetic and subjective level and missing the point a bit.
just my opinion, just enjoying the debate. I'm sure someone with more knowledge of TV can easily come along and blow my argument out the water.
- Some interesting points there Kelpie, it's about time we talked about design again in here, for a change :Duncle_helv
