A bit of background: this is for a friend who runs a mobile recording studio. I've developed the logo from a concept that his girlfriend (fine art graduate) did.
He's pretty happy with my idea (the first one just in black) but he asked for having the "skyscraper window at night" effect. And yesterday i was working in that direction. What do you people think?

personally I don't like it, but beyond taste, it does make a lot of sense... possibly too much...
- number 2 is my favorite...neue75_bold
- Too descriptive?Fariska
- I think what emu is suggesting would help.. make it more modern and less referential...neue75_bold

i prefer the first one -- the solid black. but i don't think the type works with the icon. i'd prefer a nice sans serif -- something as simple as the icon itself.
among the skyscraper options, i prefer #2 in grayscale. with a different typeface i imagine i'll like it a lot more.

It's a bit old fashion

Maybe play with a circular shape, experiment a bit with it to add some dynamics to reflect the 'mobile studio'. You could drop the retro font for something that would give the logo a modern edge. As for the skyscraper night effect, I think, although it is for your friend, that it should remain a suggestion/direction. Obviously it doesn't work visually, drop it if it is going to interfere with the message you want to convey. Sometimes clients come up with cheesy/corny ideas, let's be honest, don't be afraid to decline, otherwise they'll thinkg you are gay or something (alright people, just a joke ; )

I like the "skyscraper at night" look of the thing. 2nd one in row 5, especially.
I don't like the font.
(full disclosure: i don't necessarily know what I'm talking about.)

What is up with the 1920's Art Deco typeface, and the equalizer reminds me of Atari's 2600 Tetris game.

I like the fact that it refers to Metropolis (same font as well), but i wouldnt show the windows at night thingy....too many irrelevant details
- btw I like the top one - the originalDoorman
- But what is the reference? Has nothing to do with the movie or the era!Vicentvangogh

Where's your other idea?

It's painful to see the increased stroke weight on the A and S of Audiopolis because you went and enlarged them for no apparent reason. Correct this please.
And give the client another option!

I have preference to #2 in regards to the windows. As far as being functional at that state I could see it falling apart at smaller sizes - you may want to do a few separate versions of the logo to be used in different context.
In regards to the base mark (the b&w top version) you have some type issues (see monospaced remark) and also there is some white space being trapped in between the type and the bars.

Ok I know I am not directing this but....
Why not combine all the Skyscrapers into one object (pathfinder tool) and add a single knockout for a window in the tallest pillar. By combing them it would make the objects and type a little more cohesive. Just saying.

you're lacking style integration and have just stacked one design on top of another and neither are that well developed or compelling to look at. a fun idea though! i think you just need to get your hands a little dirtier .. so to speak.
- i take back my 'neither are developed' comment on the inverted version of #2_salisae_

I also would like to see a different typeface used. Maybe sometime of grotesk?

They all look the same, don't dig the font. Doesn't look like it would reduce well.
