    Hi,
I've looked this up online and have tried a variety of things. nothing is working.
the computer will start up, chime, the apple will appear for about 5 seconds and then the computer just shuts off. any ideas?

Apart from going through that whole doc... You could try booting from the Install DVD, and run Disk Ultility > Repair etc....

    or boot in Safe Mode...

    and run fsck...

    woah.....

Im having the exact same problem. but mine isnt a g5. its a quad-Intel. Ive been living with it for about 3 weeks.....not ever shutting the machine down because of back to back projects.

I took it to the "genius bar" and they kept it for a couple of days and said it was a bad ram bank, and removed some of the ram and gave it back, saying it was fixed.

    But they lied.

    • don't they always... genius bar my arse!hans_glib

in my situation it behaves the exact same way on starting up from the dvd or a firewire drive.

That makes me think its a bad motherboard.

If you can't even boot off disc, or restore......it's definitely bad hardware. I would start with swapping out the Hardrive, then maybe the RAM and see if it behaves any differently. Also the power supply would be something to look at, though usually if that is bad...it would not power on at all. As far as the motherbaord goes.....sometimes when capacitors go bad they make a "hissing" noise...or you can see they appear swollen....take off the side of your case so you can hear/see if anything is wrong. Good luck.

    • Also if it's a bad hard drive, often they make a loud grinding or clicking noise.designbot
