Robert Riley’s XR3 is an incredible machine that is able to achieve over 125mpg on biodiesel and a whoping 225mpg in hybrid mode. With its sleek composite shell and ultra-efficient engine we were expecting to see a stratospheric price tag, however we were stunned to hear that the you can build it yourself for around $25,000! (assembly and parts not included)

Why can't a car company make a fuel efficient car that doesn't look completely shit?

One of my mates just bought a minted Mrk 2 Ford Fiesta XR2

E registration (UK) so, early 1980s

Back when we all passed our driving tests, we all had XR2's in my group of friends. So its a wee trip down nostalgia lane for him.
His wife has the kiddy-carrier and she'd given him carte-blanche to get whatever he wanted as his car - for work etc.
So he got the XR2 on ebay.
    Cost him £2500
Its absolutely mint condition, the only wear is a small patch on drivers seat and it even has the original ford stereo and wiring - so its obvious this car has never been owned by a boyracer.

Looking forward to seeing this car, and having a shot too ; trip down memory lane.

I used to have a silver one that I sold after I finished art college and moved through to glasgow for my first job. Thats about 8+ years now, and I sold my F reg one for £1600.

WISH id held onto it and kept it in my folks garage as a wee investment as my one back then was minted too.

Once upon a time these cars were one of the most popular hot hatches but you rarely see them - esp mint these days, they'll all be rotting in scrap yards because of boyracers writing them off lol.

    • u just made me think of cosworth. ...not spelled right but i think u all know what i meaaaaan.akrokdesign

"His wife has the kiddy-carrier and she'd given him carte-blanche to get whatever he wanted as his car - for work etc."

I am DESPERATELY trying to manouvre my missus into agreeing to this too, but she is such a fucking eco warrior she wont agree to two cars.

I very very nearly purchased an absolutely mint mk1 3 door XR4i in black earlier this year. It was a corker. I was going to just do it and tell my missus after the damage was done. I weakened though and when she asked what I was doing with my day, I said "blah blah blah... oh, and I'm going to go and buy a car I test drove yesterday and there's nothing you can do to stop me"

    She managed it though.

Any of these badboys could find themselves parked on my drive too if ever my missus had a moment's weakness. Preferably a 1.9litre and in black...

f*ck knows how my mate managed to get his wife to agree to it but she did. we used to tamper with our XR's back in the day (when engines were simple carborator things), so think he maybe persuaded her that if anything went wrong with it he could fix it on the cheap or with bits from scrappys - hence saving money rather than having to go to garages and get them to fix stuff.

I really wish i had my old xr2. it was mint showroom condition, when i had it was about 10 years old, whenever i took it in for MOTs, mechanics would be amazed that it was a 10 yo car. only had 60,000 on the clock, nice spoked alloys (not the standard pepperpots) and spaz adjustables allround keeping it glued to the deck :)

Thats it below - with some racing XR2's behind it in paddock

    http://945error.googlepages.com/xr2_1.jpg

    http://945error.googlepages.com/xr2_2.jpg

    • Would look even better with an original set of pepperpots on it. I have a Mk1 XR2, sad... yes. I'll never sell it though.MSL1/2
mrk1s nice cars but i do prefer the 2. bit more bulk about it rather than the skinny angular 123kon2/2

I do love the Mk1 myself too.

MSL, Haven't seen youa round in a while mate. I had to tell your man there I wasn't interested you know... he kept emailing me and jostling me and each time he did that I got even further away from thinking it might be worth checking out!

It all started when he said I had to bring my portfolio along really!

    What colour MK1 you got?
