it is just sad, that palin interview. it is simply sad. that is what it is. you'd almost feel sorry for her.

yet, if mccain/palin do win this election, it means the US is intellectually bankrupt. it would simply be a confirmation to those who already believed this and a shock to those who had higher hopes. and a party on the basis of "ignorance is bliss" for those who can identify themselves as hockeymom.

"Today I opened up the Stockton Record and discovered much to my surprise they were endorsing Barack Obama. Keep in mind that this is the paper that endorsed Richard Pombo in 2006 but said he needed to change. I knew the paper had been endorsing Republican for quite a while, but I didn't know they had been endorsing Republican for the last 72 years. In a story beneath the endorsement, the editor for the paper explains that the last Democrat the Stockton Record endorsed was FDR. And not FDR's last election mind you, his second one. In both subsequent elections, they chose a Republican. Wendell Willkie and Thomas E. Dewey.

In discussing their rationale, they focus on McCain's lack of judgment. In particular, his choosing Sarah Palin as a running mate and his sudden populism. They also counter criticism of Obama that he is an elitest and an "empty suit." They even make reference to McCain not knowing how many houses he has. Criticism of McCain from a group that endorsed Bush and Pombo!

So what does this tell me? If Barack Obama has no problem for a paper that's trended Republican since Wendell Wilkie, why should he have a problem with Reagan Democrats?"

"Today's Daily Kos Research 2000 tracking poll has Obama up over McCain 51-42. All trackers are data from three days prior to posting, with R2K numbers from today (yesterday's numbers in parentheses) and the other trackers are from yesterday (previous day's data). LV=likely voter, RV=registered voter.

Today's trackers will have Sat and Sun post-debate data, but will not fully reflect post-debate sentiment until Tuesday. The trackers do, however, include McCain campaign suspension/resumption days.

    Obama McCain MoE +/- RV/LV
    Today
    Research 2000: 51 (50) 42 (43) 3 LV

    Yesterday
    Rasmussen: 50 (50) 44 (44) 2 LV
    Diageo/Hotline: 47 (48) 42 (43) 3.2 RV
    Gallup: 50 (49) 42 (44) 2 RV

    Times/Bloomberg 49 (48) 42 (43) 4 RV (previous data 1 week ago)

On successive days, Obama was up +7 Fri, +9 Sat and +11 Sun (MoE +/- 5.1 for individual days.) That +11 yesterday (single day polling) was Obama's strongest single day of polling, and is reflective of the debate Friday.

Other internals of note: Sarah Palin's fav/unfav are now – 9. 60+ voters are now only +5 McCain (down from +15 two weeks ago.) Obama now attracts more Dems (88) than McCain attracts Republicans (86), and Obama wins indies 49-41. McCain cannot win with those numbers.

Three of five polls have Obama up by 50% (or, if you prefer, Obama is in the 47-51% range and McCain can't break 45%.) The empirical suggestion is that McCain's "suspension" stunt failed to convince voters of its merits (click link for timeline).

Pundits give way too much credence to the idea that the aggressor in a debate wins. Partisans like aggression, but that is not what independent voters are looking for this year. They want Josiah Bartlett, not Col. Nathan Jessup. In addition to the "Obama won the insta-polls" idea (see Mark Blumenthal for Debate Reaction: What's a Win?), the LA Times/Bloomberg, Gallup and R2K improvements suggest Obama did himself some good; for those who need to see the numbers, they are there for Obama and not McCain.

    LA Times/Bloomberg:

Obama was seen as more "presidential" by 46% of the debate watchers, compared with 33% for McCain.

The difference is even more pronounced among debate watchers who were not firmly committed to a candidate: 44% said they believed Obama looked more presidential, whereas 16% gave McCain the advantage.

    The bottom line from Gallup:

But among the crucial group of independents who watched the debate -- those most likely to actually be swayed by what transpired, Obama won by 10 points, 43% to 33%."

what I wonder is who are the people Obama talks about living paycheck to paycheck not having money for gas etc? Are most people in US this way? When I was in college yes I was a bit broke. Also I don't know how government healthcare will be an improvement. Most Government run businesses don't run so well for many different reasons. I just believe we all have opportunities to make money and Obama wants to offer more hand outs for people who do not want to work hard.

    • work hard and still can't get mortgage? or a college loan?
These are people Obama will help

Obama gives tax cuts to those making less than 250k.
McCain gives tax cuts to those making more than 250k.

Obama is aiming at helping the middle class.
McCain is giving handouts to the very wealthy and large corporations. I am honestly bewildered how anyone can think that is good for an economy!!

The last 8 years has given more and more to the very wealthy, making it an extremely disproportionate distribution of wealth. Criminal, imho, that companies, the rich, etc., made so much more money, paid less taxes, while the middle class continued to decline.

Our health care system is an abomination. The fact that so few have it is just insane. The cost is insane. The abuse of drugs/prescriptions is insane.
We need a health care system that is run by someone other than insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies that just want to push the latest drug for profit (no new drugs, no inflated prices, no huge profit).
Also, the quality of care here is absurd.

Yes, most people I know live hand to mouth, even those that are making close to 100k a year. I agree that is sad, but that is the case.

is the paycheck to paycheck sceanrio related to the levels of debt(credit) people are exposed to?

There was something in the UK about how on average people are 1.5 paychecks away from bankrupcy or something stupid like that.

Also there was some economist from the US on the radio and during a discussion about the bailout he said "it will hit the people on mainstreet when they go to buy milk and can't get credit"

who the fuck buys their bread and milk with a credit card?

    • if you do not have credit, it means all your cash on hand must be used. You must not have a car note or a mortgage Lowimpact.capsize

All I know is that I've worked hard to get through school, get a job get insurance or pay for my own medical, dental bills. I'm just tired of the people who do not work get all the breaks. People that are dirt poor with no income go to college free, people who don't work and have three kids get free rent and food.

    • so are you going to vote for the guy who robs you and gives to the rich?hallelujah

  • formed0

"no income go to college free"
Really? I don't know of any. You can borrow the cash, but can't go for free.

Do you pay for healthcare or does your employer? Big difference. I pay about $4000 per year for health insurance (as a business owner it is lower than it normally would be - took me a year to qualify for it).

Wellfare is an entirely different discussion, to which I tend to agree with you.

Ultimately, though, where do you want the money? In your hands, via tax CUTS (Obama).

Or give it to the very wealthy, and pray that it "trickles down", which it does not (McCain).

lowimpact - yup, credit card debt is the killer. People bought more than they can take on, paid bills while out of work, etc. It takes ages to get back to zero at 18%!
That's the big problem with the world, credit cards. Personally, I maintain no balance on my cards (have only had a balance on one card for one month, in 15 years).

"The nation's unemployment rate zoomed to a five-year high of 6.1 percent in August... So far this year, job losses totaled 605,000."
    http://www.time.com/time/nation/…

This is not a coincidence. Our economy is truly in the shitter, and just a week ago, John McCain said the fundamentals of our economy our strong (then quickly altering is wording after he realized he was wrong).

I personally know more people who have lost their jobs this year than ever before. People with college degrees. The path that Bush has taken us down is ruining us, and John McCain wants to keep going down that same path. We need to try something else. Obama is the only one who will work for the struggling middle class and help rebuild this country.

    • Yeah, "the workers"... that means nothing. Of course workers are strong. That says nothing about what got us in this situation.joeth

    Why universal healthcare is important...

This so-called "collapse" was triggered by the massive defaulting and foreclosures going on with people's home mortgages. Do you know why so many Americans are losing their homes? To hear the Republicans describe it, it's because too many working class idiots were given mortgages that they really couldn't afford. Here's the truth: The number one cause of people declaring bankruptcy is because of MEDICAL BILLS. Let me state this simply: If we had had universal health coverage, this mortgage "crisis" may never have happened.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/0…

    • Actually it was triggered by all the derivative financial instruments and their attendant insurance policies built on these bad loansTheBlueOne
