"Today I opened up the Stockton Record and discovered much to my surprise they were endorsing Barack Obama. Keep in mind that this is the paper that endorsed Richard Pombo in 2006 but said he needed to change. I knew the paper had been endorsing Republican for quite a while, but I didn't know they had been endorsing Republican for the last 72 years. In a story beneath the endorsement, the editor for the paper explains that the last Democrat the Stockton Record endorsed was FDR. And not FDR's last election mind you, his second one. In both subsequent elections, they chose a Republican. Wendell Willkie and Thomas E. Dewey.

In discussing their rationale, they focus on McCain's lack of judgment. In particular, his choosing Sarah Palin as a running mate and his sudden populism. They also counter criticism of Obama that he is an elitest and an "empty suit." They even make reference to McCain not knowing how many houses he has. Criticism of McCain from a group that endorsed Bush and Pombo!

So what does this tell me? If Barack Obama has no problem for a paper that's trended Republican since Wendell Wilkie, why should he have a problem with Reagan Democrats?"
