  i'm running 10.5.3, dual core xeon 2.66... I can run apps but the beachball comes up when I'm in the Finder. I have trouble restarting as well.

  anyone have any suggestions, I would be most appreciative...

  Unplug, reboot, and then see how things are for stability. Maybe spotlight is trying to matrix a USB drive, or a scanner is being weird or something?
  If it's stable upon reboot, try putting things back together until you figure out what's causing the instability.
