i'm running 10.5.3, dual core xeon 2.66... I can run apps but the beachball comes up when I'm in the Finder. I have trouble restarting as well.
anyone have any suggestions, I would be most appreciative...

Unplug, reboot, and then see how things are for stability. Maybe spotlight is trying to matrix a USB drive, or a scanner is being weird or something?

Have you looked in Activity Monitor to see what processes are taking most processor time? (Choose 'All Processes')
