So after waiting 8 months I FINALLY have a HSMP work permit and a matching residency visa.
Hot Damn.
So I'll be coming over for somewhere between 2 years and forever in early October.
I have one question for any US ex pats there: How did you move your stuff? I am not bringing much since most flats are furnished, but I have a bunch of books I want to bring.
Can anyone recommend a shipping/moving service?

October, when, exactly?
*books open ticket to Minneapolis for late October*
- I'm such a witty tease.
Look forward to meeting you, FB.detritus - either the 3rd or the 10th. You could just stow away in skt's baggageflashbender
- Looking forward to meeting you as well. We'll probably end up being too similar and thus hating one anotherflashbender
- In that case I look forward to a sustained bout of mutual loathing!detritus
- yes... as you know I have been seeking a nemesis lately, so maybe it'll go that wayflashbender
- oh right, you'll meet HIM. I *get* it.kuzzAAAAM
- Now you get it, but I'm confused. That's just not fair.flashbender
- nairn, you're such a damned tease. don't listen to him, fbender, he never comes out to play.paraselene

- stalkees don't tend to write back in my experience, kuz.paraselene
- 'capacity' meaning the capability to absorb your ego radiation
;)detritus - And Para - I still feel sick for not going to your wedding celebration - that really was bad - tho I did have reason. xdetritus

i arrived with the clothes on my back and all my belongings are in my dad's basement.
google container shipping companies in your area. if you don't mind waiting a few months you can ship a full pallet for about $500 (that's a c. 2004 price that i was quoted once, but still...).
you should probably also bear in mind that no matter how small your accommodation in the states, it will seem damn near sultanic compared to anything in/near/on london.
good luck!
- *adds 'Sultanic' to lexicon*detritus
- fyi, that's most likely a neologism. i'm too lazy to check.paraselene
- *adds neologism to lexicon*
;)detritus - And thanks for the pallet shipping idea, you are the second that suggested that it seems the best option right nowflashbender

lol@ sultanic
It is funny, this took longer than I thought it would and my lease in my sultanic 2 bedroom 1100 square foot apartment ran out in march and I had to move. And I'm thinking well, it'll only be a month or two, so I'll just grab something on the cheap.
So I move into this shitty 400 (or less) square foot studio. And then it took FOREVER to get all this settled, so I like to think of my time in the shitty little studio as training for london. Or if I get something slightly larger it'll be that much better.
Anyway, yeah, I've been looking at places on gumtree and am prepare to *gulp* spend 3 times as much on rent as I am accustomed to.
- paraselene0
get used to all of that shit!
honestly, it bridles the soul spending so much money on so little. i'm from idaho, for chrissake. you can buy *people* there for what i spend on rent in london.
- They let you buy people in Idaho?
*rethinks London move
*considers Idaho moveflashbender - what can i say? life is cheap in the potato state...paraselene

Believe it or not, you can find cheap rent in London if you don't insist on living bang in the centre.
The only issue then is, that any potential savings you make will get eaten up by Transport for London.
- what your definition of bang in the centre? Oxford st?Fariska
- I'm looking in the west end... kensington / hammersmith-ishflashbender
- ooooo-ooh! look at mr. fancypants!paraselene
- Yes, I am quite fancy.flashbender
- she-bu for umaximillion_

These threads never make London look good to me.
- flashbender0
but how do these make London look?
- set0
Tip: Don't say 'hot damn' anywhere in london, ever.
:D

Have a look also on the shoreditch/bethnal green/whitechapel area. Is still pretty cheap and it's really handy beacuse a lot of creative agencies are located on the east end.
But most people will disagree with that. And btw.. get in town, find a cheap place for the first week and then you'll start looking for a place. The things here are pretty fast.
- I am intrigued by shoreditch. So yeah, that may be an option as well. The west end seems more popular and hence >>flashbender
- more expensive. But the last few times I've been over there I've stayed in Hammersmith and I like that area quite a bit.flashbender
- go east, young man.paraselene
- east or north. everywhere else is full of cunts.skt
- agentfour0
you should be able to find some pretty cheap places out hammersmith way...not really kensington tho. west is best!
Where in US you heading skt?
- LALA land.skt
- oooh nice. were you in NY at some point?agentfour
- aye, lived there for 6 months last year.skt
- im thinking about doing that next year for 6months/year. Is it worth it? seems quite difficult to get set-up there..agentfour
- it isnae easy, but not impossible.skt
- if i do it I'll be going alone not knowing a soul.....heart on sleeve and figs in hand. :-/agentfour
- mmmmmm figsflashbender
- hmmm...la? are you sure you want to do that?lvl_13
- yep. kind of. i mean, i would rather go back to nyc, but none of our clients are there.skt

Do you know what bender means in London?
- modern0
"But most people will disagree with that."
I disagree with the cheap part

You can get a good flat share between £500 - £600 a month within zone 1 & 2. Excluding bills.
- really? that seems very affordable. and Zones 1&2 would be what towns?flashbender
- I pay £60 pounds a week for a good size room (shared with my girl) and takes me 25 mins to get to work right in pic circusblackspade
