The bottom line with all this is that the IOC may have fucked up giving them the games.
But don't shit on the whole Olympics... the dreams of countless of thousands of athletes from around the world. Sometimes the only chance at the world stage many small and impoverished countries ever see, is wrong. The ideal of the Olympics is solidarity, ever temporarily, and should surpass the host.
Its not supposed to be about politics... besides, opening up China to the world and raising people's awarness of the problems can only help long term, rather than keeping them walled up. The IOC saw this as an opportunity to re-introduce China to the world. Now lets see if it was the right idea.

It's kind of a pity that that the great athletes and sportspeople have to whore themselves to an event that is a multi-billion pound pr stunt for human rights abusers and war mongers. Having said that, I am fascinated by the Chinese model of lifting so many millions of people out of poverty in a short space of time. There are so many things that are great about China that swamped out in the spin.
check out these dickheads....
- why does Bush always look like he just woke up from a nap?sofakingzero
- in fairness - it's like 30 degrees C and 80% humidity - he kept his coat on.lowimpakt

My mum just called me to say that one of our neighbours that is competing (badminton) in Beijing was knocked out in his first round. This guy left school early and has dedicated his life to these 2 weeks. He is 21. crazy ass dedication.

A) hahaha on the arrogant french swimmers!
B) "China has revoked the visa of Olympic gold-medal-winning American speedskater Joey Cheek just hours before he was to board a flight to the Summer Games in Beijing. The co-founder of the awareness-raising organization Team Darfur, Cheek has been outspoken about China's relationship with Sudan, where the Beijing government has many oil-related interests"
