Roger is a racist .. wasn't expecting that.
- .. my grandfather comes out with similar comments.lukus_W
- did you miss the episode where he performed at his daughter's wedding in blackface? Season 3 I thinkidentity
- oh Jesus .. I forgot about that .. yep, he's a confirmed racist.lukus_W
- I'm sure I would be the same way seeing all my friends killed by people who sole purpose was to murder you without mercy.Mr_Right

My favorite laugh this season was Lane yelling in Japanese at the lady when he and Don were drunk in the theater watching Godzilla...
"ya know what's going on here don'tcha? Handjobs."

"Roger is a racist .. wasn't expecting that."
They're all the most racist, sexist crude bastards on the planet. Peggy's the only one with intelligence and integrity in the whole show. It's the point of the show. These are not the good old days.

"Roger is a racist .. wasn't expecting that."
Yeah, I think this is a huge oversimplification just calling Rodger a racist. His situation is a little more complex than just hating a race of people because of their ethnicity.I forget, how many people of non-japanese origin does Japan have working in their government? Oh, that's right, zero.
- lukus_W0
@Mr_right;
No .. you're wrong. He is a racist.
"His situation is a little more complex than just hating a race of people because of their ethnicity."
_EVERY_ racist can and _would_ use this argument to validate their point of view. No one hates another person's race simply because they don't like the colour of that person's skin. There are always justifications and prejudices which underlie the hatred or disdain. Racism is complex - but the behaviour can be easily classified.
If a person generalises and presupposes a person's characteristics based upon to their race, they are also - by definition - a racist. Roger fits this definition.
To be frank, it sounds like you're making excuses for your own world-view. The possibility that Japan doesn't employ foreign nationals in its government, means nothing. Even if this was true, it would not excuse someone who is exhibiting racial prejudice. It's another example of a gross generalisation.
I was surprised by Roger's racist outburst, because I find his character generally quite decent and charismatic. At the end of the day, it's clever writing and probably quite true to life. His character is expressing a view that was obviously quite common at the time.
A similar view in modern times would be much less understandable - and far more abhorrent.

All I'm saying is that everybody is hyping this show, and it's a soap opera. And I don't really care about your deep points...

he's not racist for the sake of being racist, he's harboring some bad blood and rightfully so, Japan was an unstoppable killing machine in WWII, they would have never surrendered and had they developed the bomb first, they wouldn't have thought twice about using it.
Plus he lost some close friends, so it's extremely personal.- the inability to separate an entire race of people from a govt. or groups is generally considered racism.monkeyshine
- is racism by strict definition. In fact the US is the only country to ever drop the bomb.CyBrain

The thing is, casual racism is worse than unmistakable racism imo - because it's insipid.. it slips by unnoticed, and people feel far happier to accept it - so it becomes entrenched.
"he's not racist for the sake of being racist, he's harboring some bad blood and rightfully so, Japan was an unstoppable killing machine in WWII, they would have never surrendered and had they developed the bomb first, they wouldn't have thought twice about using it."
War is ugly and people die. It's unacceptable to place blame on a nation after the fact. The vast majority of people in any war, would rather not have participated.
You're making a really moot, simplistic point, which doesn't stand up to reason, imo. It's the kind of point my grandfather would make - he has an excuse.
I know I'm going on a bit - but really, these points of view aren't worth spreading.
- you don't have to place blame on a nation but you don't have to like them either._niko
- anyway whatever, it's his character we're talking about, not you or I._niko
- I totally agree - you don't need to like or dislike anyone until you've got to know them individually.lukus_W
- plus neither of us fought in WWII so we should both STFU. We can't talk for anyone who experienced it first hand._niko
- No, I disagree with you there. The fact I didn't fight in WWII doesn't mean I can't have an opinion.lukus_W
- we both have opinions about right and wrong but we can't judge Roger for feeling how he feels._niko
- we don't know what he saw or what he experienced to bring him to that point._niko
- No matter what he's feeling, judging a race by its government's actions is pure racism.CyBrain

Out of the blue, Mad Men is about a ten year girl masturbating.
Oh yeah, and is it just me or has Betty Draper become unbearably annoying. But Trudy Campbell is hot.
- Trudy has always been hot. ned to red shes who i'd jump on! yea fuck Betty, gives me a headachesofakingbanned
- Betty's been a nightmare forever, imo. Daughter masturbating is a just a device to illustrate psychiatries increasing presence in American life.lukus_W
- increasing presence in American daily life.lukus_W

I love Japan!
Mad Men ok show. It needs to be more diverse

roger is a secret member of the vietcong - it'll come out in a few episodes
- lukus_W0
Even though he's a racist - he's still my favourite character.

oh man, that had to be one of the best episodes. Favorite part was when Don invited Roger to get drinks and he was started to say "it's 10 in the morning" and then it cut abruptly to them sitting in the bar. Little things like that crack me up.
I like how all their problems in this one revolved around them getting wasted, instead of anything serious.
