How do you charge for corporate visual identity work, such as a new logo for a corporation?

It's usually easy to convince a customer that a website (which is what I work with, mostly) must be of a certain price as it is a fairly comprehensive product. A logo, however, would often be perceived as a much simpler product - though it often isn't. Much time is usually spent figuring out the best solution, in my experience.

Do you charge per hour or give a fixed price?
How do they respond to that?

Fixed price, depends on size of company.

Fixed price would be the way to go,
I charge per hour, which might be a mistake, but I'm learning.

I think you should offer them 3 options and work revisions from there on an hr basis..

I almost always set a fixed price, but I'm guessing many clients would frown upon a price that makes up for many work hours, when the product (often) seems so simple to them?

I'm looking at an assignment where I'll only do identity. Usually I've redesigned website and stationery along with that job, which makes it easy setting a suitable price. So I'm looking for some experiences here...

Fixed estimated at the start and 20% at start. Then adjust based on the client eggbreaker-o-meter.

This is what I do and have found it very successful:

    1) I give them 1-3 packages:

    a) Package 1 = Set Price A, includes 4 designs and 1 revision
    b) Package 2 = Set Price B, includes 6-8 designs and X no. of revisions
    c) Package 3 (Full Branding) = Starting price, includes 6-8 designs+ plus multiple revisions, charged as a package or hour (depending on client)

    2) Extra revisions or designs are charged by hour

It gives the client a package to work with and they usualy go with it.

But best to check out client, time-frame (if its a tight deadline, then charge more) and take 50 up front and 50 on completion. Then send your files.

    • a) is the SILVER package
      b) is the GOLD package
      c) is KRYPTONITE!

For an assumed identity, I usually charge $20,000 for the passport, and $5,000 for each credit card.

start at 5k and then haggle for 8k.
settle on £300 notes and a promise that they'll tell all their friends.

I still don't have much clue about how much other freelancers charge for identity, but I guess I'll just estimate how many hours I'll use and hit them with a price based on that.

and add £1000 to the top of it.
Identity is not the same as web work

    • Yes, and I'll have them toss in a couple of hos and a bag of angel dust on top of THAT.doctor1/3
why would you do it for 8 x hours? for like £400 or so?mistermik2/3
I'd use more than 8 hours and the fee is more than £40 per hour. But of course, I'll figure out their budget.doctor3/3
