Hard to believe anyone charges for font management software when this is free.monospaced - +8
Works like a charm. It's good for sorting your typefaces in to categories e.g. favouritesMyke

FontBook

Suitcase, which is kinda shite and costs about $100 or Font Explorer X which is fine and free.

Is there a good workflow for FontExplorer X you can suggest? Is it good to let it copy all fonts to its folder or leave them where system put them in the first place?
How many activated fonts is 'too many' and can slow a system down?- leave your fonts where you have them - so you can categorise them in betterforcetwelve

Well I think more than 1,000 fomts activated can fuck up yer 'puter, so I just get into the habit of turning them all off every so often and let the auto activator turn em back on as needed. I ask it to manage all fonts by copying them into its own folder, so it doesn't mess about with system fonts etc.
Its also handy for deleting large groups of fonts that are installed by other programmes which can just cause your puter to run slowly.
- VectorMasked0
yeah.
I have groups or sets of fonts arranged in separates folders by type foundry. You can activate fonts by folders, font families, or by selecting as many random fonts as you want.
Check their site at Linotype for more info. Pretty much every useful function you see in other programs are in it too.

thanx! that's good news...

suitcase is excellent. make sure your OS is up to date and with the latest vs of suitcase you'll be rockin'.
font book will end in tears unless you only have 10 fonts and can't understand why anyone would use more. that's not really true but font book is incredibly underpowered and can't handle many font id issues and so can end in all sorts of hassles.

FontExplorer X.
I use manage by copying fonts, that way you have the fontexplorer folder organized alphabetically and keep your fonts backed up as you want.

I had the misfortune of using Font-book, and then tried to uninstall the fonts I used on a project, Font-book then went on to uninstall some of my system front, which then fuck my system up. Good apple.
Use FontExplorer X, It's a good peace of kit, and free, what more could you ask for.

i just deactivated most of my fonts, cleared the app caches in fontexplorer and restarted and i swear my puter is flying.
a lot of bad things seem to be caused by fonts in my experience.

Maybe stupid question (but I´m also new to using font management tools): so, what can happen, if you have (accidently) two of these programs running? do they interfere somehow (in a harmful way?)
- yes!pascii

- dos programas = muy maljaylarson

- no they don't. run suitcase and font xplorer and activate all your fonts, that way you can see allepete22
- of the fontsepete22
- Font Book doesn't count as it is part of the OS but if you are using something else, I wouldn't launch it.DeviceUnseen
- make a backup first!pascii
- yeah, thanks, think I got it...pressplay

Font Agent Pro
- hiimerik0
I for one love FontAgent Pro...

speaking of this - I use FontExplorer X and have it set to launch on startup. Sometimes it forgets which fonts I have activated.
for example, I'll jump on to QBN and the notes look wrong, and the I pull up FontExplorer and see that verdana is disabled - even though I had it enabled when I last shut down.
Has anyone else experienced this?
- no, but send a note to their support team. they'll get back to you (which is cool and unusual)Gucci
- thanks for the tipflashbender
