  can't see the fuss really, none of the flash sites i make are ever promoted through search engines anyway.

  Oops my bad...

  It's major in the fact that people who haven't been able to use flash in the past because of SEO concerns don't have to worry any longer.

  We'll start seeing a lot more flash because of this I believe.

  Google has always been able to index Flash content. It's just now it claims it can do that more accurately. My prediction is that you will see a lot of links to intros or foster swf files that are missing navigation or the rest of the content.

  So is Google is going to say "Alight I found 'dog' in this SWF file, here's the link to the SWF file. Have fun locating 'dog' in it yourself"? At which point you require watching 10 minutes of spinning text, horrible music and ending clicks to find the dog.

  While a step in the right direction, until Flash has something like SWFaddress by default searching is only a minor bandaid.

  Yeh, deep-linking sux a big one. SWF Address is nice but you still have to code the logic for the url. I'm sure Adobe will come up witha solution though. Its a step forward though.

  Regardless of what they come up with they'll be some set of standards on how to structure your flash to make best use of the updated technology. It's not like all flash sites are suddenly going to be seo compliant.

  Yep, kinda what I suspected:

  What Google Can Crawl in Flash

  Then the designer in me asks: Flash is complex; what exactly can Google now crawl?

  * textual content in SWF files of all kinds
  * words that appear in your Flash files can be used to match query terms in Google searches
  * URLs that appear in Flash files

  What Google Can Not Crawl in Flash

  Then the critical analyst in me asks: doesn’t leave that a lot not indexed? Yes.

  * Google will not crawl Flash embedded with javascript. At this time, most Flash websites are now embedded using JavaScript due to object embedding court hearing with IE.
  * Google will not crawl external resources that are loaded by your Flash files.. A lot of flash sites use a separate flash file to load the main SWF. In essence, the only flash file that will be indexed is the loading file.
  * Google will not crawl XML files loaded by Flash. Aside of the annoying use of flash for a brochure site, most rich media sites load data via XML (separation of presentation from data is a good thing). Bye bye data.

  If I'm reading this right, the vast majority of modern Flash sites will not be included, either because they are data-driven, or embedded by JS.
