I used to love this company when I was at uni. Anyone know if they are still going as I have not seen or heard anything form them in a while.
What companies do you think have disappeard off the radar?

Blue Source closed their doors about 12-18 months ago. One of the founders has set up something called Village Green but I don't really hear much about them so don't knwo what they're up to.

Peter Chadwick who started Zip Design is now working by himself as Popular.

Fuel were the thinking man's Tomato when I was coming out of college, but you don't hear a damn thing about them these days.

Still around but never seeming to make any high profile waves anymore. What was their main design and art director bloke who did all the Primal Scream stuff??? Was once a design hero, I can't remember his name right now though.
I think the whole industry has turned on its head in the last 2 years.

Really... strange they still have their site up. I wonder if they fell foul to digital downloads and MP3's relying too much on making an income from album covers?
Fuel are still going, they won an award last year I think.
Tappin and Gofton http://www.tappingofton.com/ left Blue Source as well.

Simon Earith from Blue Source became Yes Studio i think. Not sure if that coincided with Blue Source closing its doors though.
And theres Tappin & Gofton, who left and started up, funnily enough, Tappin Gofton. I remember they did that coldplay album with the strange head illustration. I forget the name of it. Sure they do a fair amount of music stuff but dont hear about much else by them.

Conran DesignAll great studios that aren't so high profile these days. I think it was when the Tappin Goftons, Universal Everythings, MadeThoughts that all emerged from out of the good studios and became the hot new things. Now I wonder if they are feeling a bit out of date? This industry has accelerated faster in the last two years than at any point in the history of it I reckon.
- check out "advanced beauty" - from universal everything and others. went to their premiere and was auite impressedmaximillion_

What happened to these guys... (they've had a holding page for longer than Farrow!!!!!!)
http://www.malonedesign.co.uk/Also I remember a company called "The Kitchen" and they seem to have gone from ultra modernists to this (looks like a buy out)...
http://www.thekitchen.co.uk/And it also looks like these two have reformed which should be cool...

The first album sleeve artwork I ever did earned me 10k for the cover image alone, plus 5k more for buyout of that image. That excluded the design of the album sleeve package, and the design, production and layout of all the marketing and promo materials, press ads etc.
All in, I reckon as a partnership we earned about 40-50k off that album alone, and then there's about half that again for each of five singles released on at least three formats.
Last time I bothered with a major label (I just don't any more) I agreed to do an entire campaign for 8k. Album artwork, full package design and production and three singles, all for less than I got in 2002 just for the picture on the front. I negotiated extra fees for laying out press ads and posters, but they were essentially offering 8k for a campaign.
The artist decided he wanted to be on the cover of the album, which wasn't part of the original breif so I had to go to the label and ask for some budget to shoot the artist. Bear in mind that prior to them parting company this act was a priority act for the label. Know how much they gave me to shoot him? to shoot a priority act for an album sleeve....

Terrible Website and the work isn't really shown well but in his day jake Tilson was THE man. There used to be a bookshop on Long Acre, Covent Garden called D’arts and it had a special section for artist and designer's self published/hand made/limited edition art books.
It was a really cool place and you could pick up odd little photocopied zines and really beautiful screen printed books made by designers etc.
Jake Tilson used to make these amazing... really urtterly amazing little books all about found objects and ephemera from his travels around the world. Just assembled little scrap books really, but he'd work on them and turn them into really beautiful things. I reckon art students made him very rich back in the day. We'd all be fighting over them soon as they appeared.
