The first album sleeve artwork I ever did earned me 10k for the cover image alone, plus 5k more for buyout of that image. That excluded the design of the album sleeve package, and the design, production and layout of all the marketing and promo materials, press ads etc.

All in, I reckon as a partnership we earned about 40-50k off that album alone, and then there's about half that again for each of five singles released on at least three formats.

Last time I bothered with a major label (I just don't any more) I agreed to do an entire campaign for 8k. Album artwork, full package design and production and three singles, all for less than I got in 2002 just for the picture on the front. I negotiated extra fees for laying out press ads and posters, but they were essentially offering 8k for a campaign.

The artist decided he wanted to be on the cover of the album, which wasn't part of the original breif so I had to go to the label and ask for some budget to shoot the artist. Bear in mind that prior to them parting company this act was a priority act for the label. Know how much they gave me to shoot him? to shoot a priority act for an album sleeve....

    Five Hundred Quid.
