drag and make a text box with the type tool, then modify it to the shape you want with the pen/pencil tool

area type tool

If you mean you want the character shapes, Command Shift O. (create outlines).
I think you mean have a paragraph of text conform to a closed path. Use the area type tool. (Hold down on the type tool and scroll down). Click inside your shape and type or paste text.

as far as i know, u have to create individual text paths.
or expand the shape, then go to OBJECT>ENVELOPE DISTORT>MAKE WITH TOP OBJECT, but this doesn't work well with type.

basically i was looking to make a bottle shape out of a word--i know i can use the area type tool if it was lots of little text, but this is just for one word.
- draw/scan/outline seems a better approach for thisflashbender
- i have to do about 30 different shapes...so i was looking for a way to do it more efficiently...so far dirty's is the best.

Envelope distort - make with mesh?

There is no "make it look like a bottle button" :D, Apple + O, make a guide layer with the shape you want, drag and distort the control points.

Use the warp function under effects. You can choose squeeze which is kinda like a bottle.
