this has 100% to do with the process by which the company you are with operates/delegates, and 0% to do with being a 'project manager'.

I do and it works

I send 'em a chicken bomb. Looks like some poor soul lost his nerve on the ride into work.

Our project manager = Dead Wood

Some are good others are bad. In short, they administrate. They are a conduit and will never satisfy the needs of designers since they answer to the company and deliberate for those interests and keep clients satisfied.
- they kiss ass up, while they should be kissing ass downdesignerror

i thing NOT to do for a PM?
Don't sit on changes for hours on a friday knowing full well that they have to be done that day. Then decide to bring them over to a designer at 4 o'clock so they're made to stay late. That's just balls.

the company hired YOU to design, not the project manager. in your review (or ask for a meeting) tell them you don't feel your project manager is letting you do your job effectively. preferably without your project manager in the meeting... i've worked with project managers who thought they could design. she wouldn't even show the client my comps, only the ones she creative directed. we lost that client because we couldn't get approved on the design.

Save your money. Then, move to Mexico and surf til you're old.

I am a PM.
I never ever ever look over my designers shoulders and defend their choices to the very end.
- maybe you just open you're own PM school...?robotron3k
- right on- you are a rare breedBonSeff

Great project managers understand everyone's needs and will fight to get you the time you need. They can be your best friend in that way but poor project managers make life miserable for everyone. The good ones also know they are not designers.

I've had amazing pm's that made my life easier, I've also had ones that thought they were the art director and even a couple in between...
it's nice to be directly involved with a client, but depending on the client or studio/agency, you can spend your day holding their hand, dealing with suppliers and starting your design work at 5pm...
best to say something now if you have an issue with a pm. but when they are good, they can make your job/life a fuck of a lot easier...

Tell him to pick two.
-My foot in your ass
-A chair over your back
-You walk away living
Then say "The last one doesn't count". Sounds more like the guy and not his title.

i am also a PM. I've been recently promoted. In what way were the PMs that you had awesome? I wanna be an awesome PM.
- one way is, don't be an "up-talker" http://www.urbandict…robotron3k

It's hit or miss...
... one contract I'm on right now is packed w/multiple PM's - some ROCK... some suck... and I mean... SUCK.
Fortunately I work from home - but an Instant Message that says something along the lines of 'can I see?' when you've barely had assets for 2-3 hours is enough to throw me off and kill my 'creative buzz' of sorts...
... couldn't imagine having one riding shotgun while I work though... I can barely do that with another designer by my side.

LOL at this thread, I'm sure it's brutal as a designer in some regards.
I'm a PM/Consultant myself and deal with quite a large amount of tasks and projects delegated to designers, system architects, developers, system teams, etc. but I think a great catch is that we all know our indsutry, products, best practices, those sorts of things.
We build Web sites and all other sorts of marketing technology platforms such as proposal generation systems, blogs, mini-sites, career and alumni sites, contact management, e-mail marketing, handheld sites, media centers, extranets, intranets, experience managers, etc. and all/only for law firm clients.
This is the first job I've had as a PM and I really enjoy it. Considering the industry/technology we are all expected to know our stuff and I think that helps tremendously when it comes to assigning projects and all involved knowing what works best.

I don't understand why they exist most of the time. They are typically useless, not to mention ignorant. I once worked at an agency that had almost as many PMs as it did people who actually did work, they interfered and bogged down the creative process to an alarming level and the end result was a utter shite.

"when you've barely had assets for 2-3 hours"
When you are working with someone new you should explain how you like to work. I always outline our deliverables and expected time frames in a way that avoids this tempting poking and prodding.
I think the worst thing a PM can do is start making broad changes to a design or concept before others have had a chance to look at it.
I have seen pm's torture designers with 3 rounds of changes and then it gets shown to an executive who has his say..changes posted...another exec gets to have his/her go round..and the designer ends up making many rounds of incoherent updates in what can only be described as rape.
ALL HAIL THE VISUAL DESIGNER!!!!

the pm chick at my job is scared to tell me when I have a new job because I snapped on her so many times.
just yell at them they are usually pretty easy to break down.
