I have a Honda Ruckus, and I think the safety issue is about the same as riding a bike in traffic. Mine actually tops out at about 40mph. I bought a big lock and my scooter has a handle bar lock out, so when you take the keys out after putting it into "lock," you can't turn the handlebars. I think it would be fun to have it out there. I have a blast riding mine. It has 260 miles on it now, and I have only spent about $8 on gas.

1. danger is usually in difference of speed. traffic never really gets *that* fast, so probably safer than cycling in many situations
2. considering my bicycle is usually faster than subway, probably
3. not really. parking in nyc sucks. technically sidewalk parking is illegal, but people do it. you need a big ass chain to chain it to something stationary. if it's legal, you have to worry about people knocking it over.
4. probably would be fun. i can't say either way since i've not had a scooter there so wouldn't be speaking from experience

nah i just purchased a bicycle http://www.irocycle.com/
i used to own a Piaggio http://www.piaggio.com/ Vespa when i went to school in Italy.
in NYC i want a vespa, i see so many, but it is not a practical item of transport for me, the subways are the best and fastest way in NYC.
if i was to get a Vespa i would use it for fun over for function.

the whole part of huge chain and people knocking over my bike is what concerns me the most as my bike as all matte black the slightest scratch or dent is bothering my mind to anexiety as i want to keep it mint. meh!!
anyone want to go bike riding with me?

i think mainly a vespa is a for fun item if you are using it in NYC, b/c of the parking situations as jason mentioned above. you know what you need is a bicycle with a mini engine on it. i saw one the other day on the street it was awesome!!!
- exactly, i would want a garage or some private parking place to park it.doesnotexist

I think your scooter will get trashed if your parking it in a not so nice area every night. My car gets hit, dented, mirrors broken off, etc constantly in a nice part of brooklyn. That said, it would be sweet to have a vespa here and it seems like many people make it happen. Maybe no one messes with scooters.

I ride a 50cc Honda Metropolitan in Minneapolis. It's alot of fun, but people are here are complete assholes in the fact that I have been almost run off the road countless times from fraternity brothers on Hennepin avenue when I'm coming home from work over the bridge into St. Anthony Main.
That said, in my opinion it's more dangerous than riding a bike in the sense that you're traveling fast; with traffic - constantly. Also, make sure you have a good hiding spot for it when you park it downtown. Don't park it anywhere on Nicollet. It will be trashed in a week.

i don't ride a scooter, but I sure as hell would if I had somewhere to keep it. they get great gas mileage and you prolly wouldn't be going over 40 here in nyc.
- i wouldn't even think about parking it on the street. before you know it someone will kick it over and steal your spark plugs.doesnotexist
- yeah, sorta worried about the fucking crackheads. can i just park it and remove the sparkplugs every time? :Dlvl_13
- i suppose, i would think about getting a spot in a garage or something thoughdoesnotexist
- yeah. probably a safer bet.lvl_13
