citizen_h tell them to trust that you're a creative professional and your judgement is an educated one, and to fuck off if they just want to direct their bad ideas through someone who actually knows how to use the tools.

good luck explaining to them the difference in quality between a "guy with photoshop" and a professional designer's output. the second i catch wind of such a perspective, i walk. there is no sense in trying to explain it.
it's like explaining usability to my last client. wrote them a long email explaining certain points and she comes back with "i don't know what usability means, but the people in my office it looks better the way i want it."

I didnt read through a lot of responses. But it sounds like a similar situation I dealt with. Could it be that they want to save as much money anywhere they can? Often those kind of business people find that design is merely the use of Adobe tools, and that they don't need to pay extra for someone with knowledge of design conventions.
If that is the case, gross. They probably just don't know any better.

I'm in the same position but on the other side. I work for a company about to release a national product and I don't have any experience and my boss wanted to hire two consultants but I talked him out of it. I downloaded paintshop pro the other day and I've designed some business cards for my aunt once before. Wait....are you guys.....!!
