never tried the couch-surfing site, but have heard some good things about it.
my advice is to just purchase a eurail pass and go. seriously, if you have no plans you could just book night train travel from place to place along the eurail. it's like $25 extra for a night cabin, but it saves you the hotel/hostel room cost (which may or may not be worth it). it just depends on your travel style really.
you have no plans, but do you have a general direction? or places you wnat to see? shoot me an email if you want. i am by no means an expert (only been there once last may, but we went with no plan and no places booked... and it worked out pretty well!)

Europe use to be a place of cultural diversity back in the days.
Now they call it EU with no border control, they use the same coin, drink the same beer and watch to same tv. Kinda like light version of the US.
Sad

Eurail pass doesn't actually mean that you can hop on any train without any problems. Pretty much all of the trains require booking (and there are usually booking fees).
But the passes are good. I had a 2 month one a couple of years back. It cost me more than my return flight to London (which isn't cheap from Australia). But it is a lot cheaper than if you were going to get the tickets all separately.
If you are staying in hostels then www.gomio.com was the best for booking places. hostelbookers.com etc all charged huge fees.

Both Paris and Prague are definite if you've never been there before.

I have a huge bed, you could easily fit in there with my girl and I... You can stay free too if you help the cleaning lady once a week and make us sandwiches on the weekend...
