Either way, I found it interesting that he didn't explore the river a bit further. Common sense tells me that one would walk the banks a bit to see if maybe there is a safe place to cross. I assume if he did so he would have found the tram.

So for those who knew him, McCandless's story can be a series of contradictions. A guy who gave burgers to the homeless and wanted to end world hunger died of starvation. A guy who wanted to flee suburban comforts died because he underestimated nature and his ability to survive in it. A guy who rode his bike or ran to school because he hated to ride a school bus lived for months, and died, on a bus. - Post

"His body was found in his sleeping bag inside the bus, weighing an estimated sixty-seven pounds."

- I love that even as he faces death, he still has that smile.canuck
- creepyjaylarson
- but maybe he didn't think he was facing death?Jaline
- He knew.canuck
- i can't recall credits in movie, but i believe this photo was after the poison plant incident.. and he musta been aware of his situationhorton
- ... his situationhorton
- Depends on who you talk to. I see how it could be possible though.Jaline
- they didn't find poison in the tox reports...Jaline
- I don't know, whatever. I'm just going by the Wiki article.Jaline
- no poison didn't kill him.. i'm just using a timeline ref... but i haven't read the wikihorton
- but i believe they made a point of noting in the movie that this photo was taken after he knew he was trapped.horton
- They did, right at the end.2cents
- Good on him then, I guess.Jaline
- if it was the plant, there wouldn't be poison. nutrients just wouldn't be absorbed when internalized.jaylarson

I like that Wiki article. It gives you both sides.

Looks pretty pleased with himself:
"My 6 month suicide is going to plan"

I like Richard Proenneke though.

i liked it

Didn't like it, or his "charater".
If he hadn't of died - I'd have hunted him down and killed him myself.
- pr20
i'm pretty sure his death is not the point and if i was the filmmaker and got this discussion after making a movie about human spirit i would be way disappointed.
- moth0
Be disappointed then - he was made out to be a selfish cunt who didn't ring his mother.

Imo, it's about the lesson within the lesson.
He was at a turning point in his life and he went for it, sought out his "ideal life" only to come to the realization in the end that happiness is only real when you share it.
He didn't want to kill himself, it just turned out that way, he didn't have a detailed map of the area or a compass.. bad move.- +12cents
- incorrect sea_sea... he wasn't into SHARING at all... if you'd listened...josimar
- you'd have heard way early on he realised his life wasn't about human relationships it was about his relationship with his surroundings.josimar
- .... surroundings.josimar

- I like this explanation, although I haven't seen the film.Jaline

i think this movie is helpful. if you've ever had it up to 'here' with civilized society and just want to bail... this guy actually does just bail. he's like jezus dying for your sins so you don't have to. even Bear Grills himself can't live forever 'into the wild'

I thought it was a beautiful film. Hal Holbrook was just wonderful.
Whether or not you feel he was selfish, naive, or self-destructive, I don't think it was the point to paint a picture to that effect one way or the other. It was more about process - the process of searching, seeking different answers and not necessarily accepting what's handed to you whether that leads to your death or not. I think the film shares a kinship with "Grizzly Man" in that respect.

i thought it was a pretty good movie. then again, i am very easily impressed. in fact, i usually like the work posted on this web site.

This in response to Josimar ^
If you read my post correctly, I said he came to the realization in THE END that he needed to share his life to be happy. If you think about it, he achieved his goal to a certain point, all he wanted was to have a life changing experience, he called it "the spiritual revolution, to kill the false being", and he did exactly that, It was unfortunate he didn't have the chance to leave the wild and practice what he learned.
What for people might seem selfish, was only a young man following his passion and ideals. Plus who hasn't followed their "dreams" or desires to a certain extent disregarding what our parents say or think about them?! In that case we are all selfish for perusing our true being, yet I personally wouldn't call it that.- well, yeah I get what you're saying and don't know enough details to say it's wrong but my impression of him was that he truly believed to the end (echoed by the smile in the photo), that he didn't need anyone else to approve or share what he was doing. It kind of takes away from his ideals if all he was doing it for was to 'show it off' to someone else.josimar

- i get your point.. what i'm not sure of is when that photo was taken.. yeah he was trapped by the growing river, but not dying yet..sea_sea

Whenever I hear about "Into the Wild," I think about this...
- A man lived alone in a cabin he built by himself, without power tools, for 35 years.JackRyan

I agree with metal_leg_will (nice screen name there...)
great movie, sad story. But, he did have a moment of incredible clarity, maybe even revelation at the very end.
Good cinematography, great soundtrack too.
