UES never has any space in its Yorkville apts. Better off finding something pre-war north of Columbia.
I've been on 150th for a few years and it's fine.

I'd recommend Washington Heights and Inwood. Up around 180th street, still affordable.
Or Queens.

for cheap 2 bedrooms go out to greenpoint or bushwick or somewhere out there.

Also, I lived in Yonkers for 2 years. Didn't love it, but it was affordable. 20 min ride to Grand Central out my door.

A) What's your budget?
B) Harlequino has a good idea - consider the NYC near northern suburbs (Yonkers, Pelham, New Rochelle). Really 30 minute ride into midtown manhattan (much closer than most of Brooklyn) plus you'll get more reasonable prices (but additioanl commuting costs)

You can get a nice studio for 1200 in astoria. Screw roommates.

I'm in Yorkville (UES) now with a buddy, paying under $1100 each. Lucked the hell out to get this place though. I'd suggest looking on craigslist and narrowing your search to the UES and following through on the ones you want as soon as possible. Sometimes the owners just want to get someone in as soon as possible.

GOOD LUCK! (Unless you have a sweet bank role, then obviously not a problem.) Like someone stated Mount Vernon North of the city is only 26 mins. to Grand Central. I recently heard you can get a 2BR in Staten Island pre-war for $1250, but who wants to live out there. (Unless you do.) Try: http://jhliving.com/index.cfm?pa… These folks have some locations by where I live. Even if you have money, finding a 2BR isn't easy, unless you're going to buy... BK is getting expensive too, although it is possible. You're going to have to give and take when it comes to what you would like in options and location.
