Hi all
I might be moving from New York to Portland for a job soon and was wondering if anyone knew of a moving company that would move my things (books, printer, clothes, etc) across. Thanks in advance

if it's not a lot of stuff, i'd just ship it fedex ground. i just moved nyc > sf and spent about $1000 to ship 32 boxes, many of them upwards of 75lbs and 2'x2'x2'
there are also a few companies that offer some sort of you-pack-they-ship options, like relocube or http://www.upack.com/

i moved from ohio to la, and used best price moving and storage. they broke a lamp of mine, and i had to wait a few weeks for my stuff to arrive, but the price was good, around 2k. they moved tvs, beds, guitar amps, a huge sofa, and plenty of other heavy shit too. all in all i was happy.

i knew a girl that moved from va to sf and she sent her stuff over rail, perhaps amtrak? took a while, but if i remember, it was cheap. there are also those POD things and other shipping containers, but we looked into it and it was expensive. we uhauled it.

I shipped my computer and the boxes that wouldn't fit in my car via UPS. My books I sent via USPS, they have discounted rate for books. I would only get a mover if you are doing furniture.

I've moved crossed country via UPS and a one way plane ticket

Rent a van and drive! Petrol (oh sorry gas) is cheap for you guys and it may take some time to drive the distance, but hey its a road trip.

rented vans get terrible gas mileage. i calculated my trip with a mover at around 2k, and doing it myself was 600 more b.c of the 9mpg the truck would have gotten. plus i didnt have to carry shit.

i had a summer job in high school working for Bekins ( http://www.bekins.com/moving/ ), they were national. There's a bunch of national companies and they all pretty much work together, it's who you get the lowest quote from that's the hard part. I would not recommend using a moving company unless you got a whole household (lotsa furniture) and have cash to burn, it's not cheap.

I just moved across country and I simply filled up my audi wagon with puter, artwork, books and strapped down a container to the racks for my clothes (50 dollar thick plastic shell from uhaul) and sold everything else. My furniture wasn't worth the investment.

I moved 2yrs ago from LA to NY and used this company: http://www.broadwayexpress.net/
They were honest people and very affordable. You have to pack all your stuff yourself and put it in the truck when it shows up, then you meet them a week later at your new place and unload it yourself. We went and picked up a couple mexican dudes for hire to help with the loading and it was a cinch.
We are also talking about a move to Pdx in a couple years. See you there.

Driving all the way across the US is pretty cool. It's an interesting trip.

I moved a couple years ago from SoCal to Michigan
Used ABF UPack http://www.upack.com/ and it worked out great.

when i moved back in 2003, i priced a lot of mover options. prices had all basically doubled when i priced them again this year. thanks a lot shitty economy and high fuel prices!

I moved my stuff 2x via Amtrak. You can't ship fragile things but I had about 30 boxes shipped and it cost a little under $300. The hardest part is getting the boxes to Amtrak but once there they put everything on a palette, shrink wrap it and toss it on a train.

I recently moved from San Francisco to Mexico, after some searching, i found it way cheaper to just buy my own 12' box trailer, (moved from a house, had a lot of stuff, but did have to get rid of most of it for border tax reasons) + in the end I get to keep the trailer.
