Do you guys use png files?
I know IE has dramas with them?
Whats your workaround if you do use them?

I've found a few, but not sure what works best.

    My workaround? FUCK IE.

    • You're talking IE5, right?

      FUCK IE5.
      detritus1/4
yeah IE5 - i know, I wish I could just say fuck it, but not all ppl have up to date browsers.-kappa-2/4
Fuck 'em. Force a non CSS render of your page for all versions pre-IE7. Fuck them.detritus3/4
In fact, do a redirect to an interstitial that calls them a wanker, then link through to meatspin .com.detritus4/4

Microsoft is fucked, I can't believe their inability to produce a browser that comes close to firefox.

i still use PNG images, but i avoid transparency. IE6 doesn't draw transparency properly for some reason :S.

    • yeah it's the transparency I use them for.-kappa-

This works great in IE6 even as background PNGs in CSS elements.

    filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsof… (src='../gfx/YOURGRAPHIC.png',si…

    works with IE and transparencies.

The whole PNG issue fucks me off - I remember getting excited about them as a replacement for GIFs back around 1999. What fucking year is it now? 2008. Fucking 2008 and we're still having quibbles in supporting a fairly basic graphics implementation.

What's happened in the meantime? We've seen the rise and fall and rise again of push/pull technologies, the utter acceptance of CSS (table bodges or no) 6 (is it?) Flash updates, each with increasingly sophisticated potential, the fall of VRML, the quivering ascendance of SVG, the utter prelavance of XML, JS/'web2.0' and mass-democratisation of dynamic languages like PHP/MySQL - yet we're still having problems with a fucking proper Alpha channel in a fucking little graphic.

Fuck IEs 5.5 & 6, really. Christ - Microsoft have been pushing for those versions decline with enforced security updates, so how the on Earth there are still people out there with pre IE7 versions, I just don't know.

    Nnnngh.

i only use pngs if i have to. i find on some browsers the colour is rendered differently and if combined with other colours can look funny.

other wise only for drop shadows or gradients.

Problem with PNGs, apart from transparency, is colour matching.

Seriously, experiment with some older browser versions and colour matching. It's awful in some because PNG has some colour managing thing (don't know details), and naturally some browsers have fuxxed the implementation of it.

    http://www.w3schools.com/browser…

    As of February 2008, IE7 - 22%, IE 6 - 30%, FF 36%. I'm glad IE 5.5, IE 6 isn't too horrendous compared.

Here is the best way I've found... it's actually the same trick Apple uses on their site too I've noticed...
    http://www.twinhelix.com/css/iep…

It does have some limitations.. like it won't tile background PNGS in IE, nor will it line them up properly some times, you just have to compensate with the PNG image (maybe it the full size and not need to repeat).

    • For what it's worth, that's the script I've used in the past too.nocomply
