Real Gist...
I think there are yes and no answers to this. I’ve never experienced a place like here where everywhere you go you are expected to give someone a tip...read more http://therealgist.wordpress.com…

I always tip 20% or more. Waiters/Waitresses are paid lower than minimum wage, their salary isn't as high because most of it is supposed to come from tips.
Added to that, the government here's been a really penny pincher even demanding retroactive tax increases on employees that receive tipping.
It's funny, when I was a student with no money, the government was constantly on my ass redemanding refunds on student grants, sometimes 2 years later, they're all over people in the service industry, but now that I'm making alot of money, I never get asked retroactive anything.

I only tip well when the service and food was good. I am sorry, it is not my job to compensate their wage, and the more we do it, the more restaurant owners will take advantage of it. But when service is good, friendly etc, I will certainly tip, and well. Being in the industry is more than just taking orders and bringing food, it's a people industry, so if you are not up to that, don't be in it.
I love when I visit the UK, Scotland in particular, tipping in only on good service and not usually expected (and is more appreciated). During busy nights at the pub, waiting at the bar to order can take forever, but when you start leaving even an extra quid for the bar tender, suddenly I never have to wait anymore when I go back up. Here in North America, to get that service you need to either leave much larger tips... if I only left a dollar... I would most likely be ignored all night!

The hotter the waitress, the more I tip.

i usually pay with credit card so i often tip 17-20% to cover the finance charges (if it is a small ma and pa place)

I tip around 30%-40% to places I frequent often, other than that, ill tip average if their service is average and so on.

the worse the service, the better I tip

I will only tip if I have had good service, fuck tipping for everything, if the food wasn't up to my exacting standards and or the waiter or waitress was a prick or untidy then they are not getting any more money from me.
