I only tip well when the service and food was good. I am sorry, it is not my job to compensate their wage, and the more we do it, the more restaurant owners will take advantage of it. But when service is good, friendly etc, I will certainly tip, and well. Being in the industry is more than just taking orders and bringing food, it's a people industry, so if you are not up to that, don't be in it.

I love when I visit the UK, Scotland in particular, tipping in only on good service and not usually expected (and is more appreciated). During busy nights at the pub, waiting at the bar to order can take forever, but when you start leaving even an extra quid for the bar tender, suddenly I never have to wait anymore when I go back up. Here in North America, to get that service you need to either leave much larger tips... if I only left a dollar... I would most likely be ignored all night!
