since june i've been collecting vintage timex watches (manual/automatic from the 50s+)
they're great, horologically significant, vary in design, are cheap to acquire, there's a good opportunity to make money by refurbishing them, are easy to service, parts and plenty full.
all in all a great hobby
just buying the kit to do the refurbs is a bitch
- That's cool. I've just started getting into it myself. Bought an electric (pre-quartz) timex movement I'm trying to refurb for a small desk clock. Good times.mandomafioso

Nice chat here with Matt Farah about some fucking weirdly incredible watches.

A mate's inherited a 1970's Longines watch, it was pretty expensive at the ... time. Anyone know of a site that might help find out what it's worth nowadays?
- Search the model on ebay and see what they sell forpinkfloyd
- Deep. Why did I not think of this?MrT

- Chrono24.com is good for this.Longcopylover

- Yes! That bottom one is what I'm talking about! Pretty near perfect if you ask me. Though I would make the hands a little less pointy.nocomply
- Regarding the comments on numbers vs. no numbers above... It's funny what different brains need to tell the time...nocomply
- For me, the numbers are everything. I screw up all the time without them...nocomply
- To the point where sometimes I freak myself out for a second, thinking it's an hour earlier/later than it actually is.nocomply

- yes, I think the numbers are too bigmonospaced
- just my opinion ... I prefer to give the watch hands the hierarchy visually over the numbers themselvesmonospaced
- A favorite watch of the rare Albino Gorillarobotron3k
- I like the big numbers. It actually bugs me when the numbers are too small. I think it's a handsome watch, but I would prefer numbers for 6 and 9 as well.nocomply
- I'm the opposite. I don't even require numbers, like most people, as the hands dictate the time and you already know what the numbers are.monospaced
- Funnily, if I were to have any numbers, it would have to be the cardinal points: 12, 3, 6 and 9. The others seem overkill to me.monospaced
- I have this one, but with metal strap. Wear it daily since 2009 and stil like it.Longcopylover
- Does it feel flashy or is it under the radar?pinkfloyd
- Not flashy at all I think. It's balanced in size and colour and fits every outfit from casual to business. Most people don't recognize the brand at first sight.Longcopylover

You can't go wrong with a $15.00 Timex, hell, it's so cheap, why not buy 4 different ones...
- Derp I mean Casio... I had Timex on the brain.robotron3k
- Completes any neckbeard outfit.ben_

- Yay if you don't mind no date function.mandomafioso
- I don't mind that as much. The snowflake hands bug me a bit, and I would prefer a blue bezelpinkfloyd

But, yay.nbq - no to the rubber strap. no overall looks clunky.shapesalad
- I've wanted that exact watch for years. I've got the "poor man's" Casio version, which honestly is still pretty darn good: https://images-na.ss…...nocomply

im going through a cheap vintage watch phase too - picking up timex, citizen, orient, oris, rado all for under 100 working but scratched to hell. hoping polywatch and some tlc (but no polishing) will bring up the appearances.
any idea how to remove and reattach the crown so i can clean the faces?
- I've used toothpaste to get a scratch out of a watch face. No idea about crown:shapesalad

- how easy it to clean up this sort of watch?shapesalad
