Canon XTI vs 40d

I see the biggest difference as consumer vs. prosumer. Do any of you have either (or even a 30D) and want to speak for/against?

have a 20d, very similar to 30/40 and I can say that the D's felt much more solid and sturdy while the plastic of the XTi felt really cheap and flimsy. The XTi is also smaller than the D's so it doesn't feel as natural in the hand.
- Yep. If you have smaller than normal hands, the XTi will be a good fit. Otherwise go with the 40d.skwiotsmith

Go to a camera shop and play with both.
I have a 30d and I love it. The xti feels small and cheaper.

Ive got a 1DmrkIII and the 40D Is alot like it. The menus are awesome and the images are great. Huge Screen!
Go with the 40D its your best bet at a lasting camera.

+1 for the lens suggestion. If money is an issue save on the body and put it in lenses

i was surprised at how large the 40d wass compared to my 20d. the screen on the 40d is super nice.
may i suggest checking out craigslist for a rebel/20d/30d. i have bought 2 20d's in the last month (long story, but one got stolen) off craigslist for $475 a piece (one had a lens, the other did not) and they were both in mint condition!

I just purchased the 40D and love it. I couldn't rave about it enough. The screen is so big, that it is impossible not to get greasy cheek marks though. Take the good with the bad. I recommend the 40D.

Yeah the XSi looks pretty nice. I'm just torn because I used to be huge into b/w with my Nikon N2000. Getting a 40D in my hands feels so good and I would love to have it. I'm just trying to see if there is the 700 dollars worth of upgrades...
- you have WAY more control over yr b/w now since you can convert from rgb. i'm going nikon, but the 40d looks great!jaylarson

i have 40D. highly recommended. not sure how the bost compares to XTI but the new Live View function on the 40D is alone worth the upgrade imho.
