so i started a new job this week at a real small firm, working part time there, need $...
today i came into my work station and there was food, juice boxes, and some of my stuff (little things, just started so haven't moved in'stuff') strewn about. upon talking to my superior (not the boss) about it he mention, the boss often lets a 7 yr old daughter play games games on it, and that it happens and that it probably won't change, and shouldn't mention it. After checking there are a shit load of games, she was logged in as an admin, didn't log out and there are ton of pop ups everywhere. How concerned should i be... right off im kinda pissed my keyboard has shit in it... and in the future it will def slow down my productivity with kids game junking up a work station perhaps even data loss...it all seems very unprofessional imo. am i overreacting? thanks for reading that...any suggestions? cheers.

that's messed up, you SHOULD mention it now.
I would find somewhere else to go, (unless you really like the job, but you just started).

right on, i feel like i want to walk... but its decent $, which i need my productivity is their productivity right? Im trying to forget it....

and dont want to get on the the boss bad side so soon... its real small...though i got to suck it up and say something, damn it
- emukid0
i suggest sucking it up for now and continue to keep an eye open for better opportunities. the situation is quite unprofessional but you said you need the $ so no point fucking that up.

You can't have a kid messing around with your WORK STATION, you could act like you are clueless and mention to the boss, excuse me, would you happen to know, when will I get my workstation/ computer? I don't mean to rush you or anything but I'm really anxious to get started!
Then he is going to ask:
What do you mean? Then you say:
Well for the looks of it, I think I'm using someone else's computer and no offense, but whoever was here before didn't like this job, there is sticky stuff all over the keyboard/ desk I'm afraid to touch it, I think I rather wait for my own station if thats ok..
(Wait a few seconds) ..maybe..
Maybe I can get started at home and when everything is ready ..Your boss interrupts..
that's probably my Son.. I will make sure it won't happen again.
Here is 1k for the trouble in cash.

small mom and pop, upstate... dont want to throw names please respect
- kewHexton0
stepping away (getting drinks), thanks for perspectives..let you know how it goes
- Meeklo0
is it literally a mom and pop shop?
I can see that.
It rough man, a very delicate situation that needs tact on the a approach, focusing on (like you say) better productivity rather than (I hate having a kid telling me to wait til I kill the monster before you check your email)

It's not very professional of them to have a kid poking around on a business machine, but it's their company, their machine, and their risk.
In my opinion, you're way too possessive of someone else's stuff.
- Really?
you have some valid points..Meeklo - I've just never understood how people can be so possessive at someone else's company. "My chair, my desk, my PC."blaw
- I've worked places where I had to contact IT to install a typeface, so locked down were the machines. No sweat to me.blaw
- I've always functioned on the "if I don't like it, then I can do it differently when I start my own company" philosophy.blaw
- well if you put it like that...Meeklo
- Well, of course mrdobs is right on with his comment. Probably worth mentioning potential issues just to CYA.blaw
- Really?

blame the kid for anything they ever have a problem with.
- detritus0
You should be very concerned.
If I were you, when I leave at night, I'd set my homepage to meatspin.com and change all .exe shortcuts to go straight to this page.

delete a bunch of your important work files and blame the kids for it. Just act pissed off. He'll apologize and tell the kids to GTFO.
- kewHexton0
Well, things are good...its a happy ending(er.. beginning)
kid is off the workstation; the kid had a fucking DS anyway.
cheers.
- Jaline0
How did you handle it?
- harlequino0
Who gave who the "happy ending?"
- kewHexton0
I spoke with the boss, pointed to some pertinent passages in the employee handbook and talked a little about productivity and professionalism, overall the boss was much more receptive than the 'superior' mentioned before had made it seem.

handcuffs and a belt sander usually sorts any situation like this out for me.
