What Jay said B+W all the way.
Also there's a technique on how to use Polarizers properly.

Speaking of insurance, how would I go about that? Through my home-owners ins.? through something else? I'll google it, but any recommendations for me?

I can't recommend enough the B+W Kasemann Circular Polarizer . It even trumps the Heliopan, Hoya, Lee, and Singh-Ray. It's worth the cost.
Sorry about yr loss Nathan, I hope to insure my camera as soon as I gets me dslr.

If the front element on your lens rotates while focusing a circular polarizer is key (as opposed to a linear polarizer).

lvl_13, just picked up a canon 40D, so next photo exchange, I should be up to par.

make sure you buy the nice ones not the cheap ones to save a couple bucks its well worth the extra $$

thanks capn! i've been shooting for so long, and since picking up my digital 2 years ago i have never bought a filter for it (i know, shame on me) and i sort of forgot the effects all the filters can have for different shot. i've become lazy in this digital world!

Indeed, works the same way with a puddle or body of water.

That's correct sir.

this is quite possibly a really stupid question, but would buying a polarized lens filter eliminate glass reflection? example: i am sitting on the bus, and i want to shoot something that is outside. a polarized filter would eliminate glare/reflection of me and the inside of the bus?
