for small infographics, something that NYT would use, flash is great for but not for building the whole website.

Everything has its place. But non-flash websites don't tend to fair well in design awards. Still the daddy when it comes to rich interactive visuals experiences.

Flash is great for websites, but for living rooms, bedrooms, dining... it has to be Flea Market, Montgomery.

flash isn't dead or dying, but search is becoming more important and better understood by the smaller sites. A completely flash based site needs a search strategy based on a simple HTML google-readble display layer to be successful, and we haven't quite seen that emerge yet. we will, though - it's all about using flash as a sophisticated display layer over clever business logic alongside other delivery strategies for mobile, search and others.
- you should have at least said synergy once in that post.skt

although is possible do a completely flash based site which will read all the content from the html page in which is emebedded (but well, it requires a damn good xml parser)

The guys where I work are all Microsoft-heads and keep banging on about SilverLight. Yawn. Does anyone genuinely think that this can compete with Flash?

Depends how much money they throw at it, and how much they promote it. If Microsoft took 1/10th of the money they make on Word, and spent it out-doing Flash, they could.
But they seem lukewarm about it...

Some of it's limitations are being overcome.

http://www.tvwonline.net/lab/pre…Not dead just yet. And even in light of the standards crowd suddenly discovering typography and grids this year, it's still better for graphically intense websites bar none.
