its actually really easy if you have a Macbook.

So... anybody know what needs to be done to swap out hard drives in a MacBook? Sounds like something I wouldn't want to do myself...

New ones have a better processor, better bat. life, new trackpad, overall it's not that much better. But it is better.
- I went back and forth since yesterday. then back and forth with which refurb. Hard process.mg33
- Yup. (although sometimes you get extra features with the refurbished (it's like a surprise) ...)Jaline
- what kind of surprise? porn?vwsung18t
- haha, no, like extra RAM or HD space. doesn't happen all the time, but mainly if the person before you upgraded...Jaline
- Mine comes with 2 GB ram, and "case covered in punk-rock stickers."mg33
- I'm sure i'll get a new one in the next month or so, i've got a few other big things to buy 1st... mbp is a want, not needjoyride

i'm thinking of getting a refurbished macbook. i would save 150 over a new one after the education discount. what would i be missing if i got it over a new one? just hard drive space?
- mg330
That's exactly what I want to do joyride.
I have not used the new external drive yet with PC since it's formatted for Mac. I am hoping I can:
1) Set up new Mac, connect to hub.
2) Set up new external (320 GB)
3) Move files from main working PC (160 and 20 GB drives) to either laptop and/or external.Logical, yes?

Macs will see the NTFS data, but cannot write to the drive. Best thing is to get the data off all NTFS drives and reformat them to Fat32 so your mac and any pc can use them. Then put the data back.

Now just need to get CS3 (a factor in buying the MBP I did at a lower cost) and I'll be in business. Goodbye Windows, goodbye frustration, goodbye paying for virus scan and spyware each year.
Looking forward to freeing up space under my desk where two towers currently sit (One of which is my 350 Mhz Compaq Presario I got in 1998! :D
Getting an external enclosure to plug in non-sata drives so I can access old files and such. Brings me to a good question: Is there any issue viewing an external drive that is NTFS from a Mac?

It's funny, it's a big expense, but I feel like a giant weight has been lifted from my brain. Seriously. Contemplated the new one that just came out, but considering I'm upgrading from a 2.0 Ghz Celeron with 1.5 GB ram, I'm going to feel like I just bought a supercomputer.!
Already bought an external hard drive last weekend. I bought the 2.2 MBP with 120 gig hard drive, but that doesn't bother me. It comes with 2 GB ram, but will probably upgrade to 4.
BTW Jaline - Your Apple links have been helpful.
- No problem. I stressed about it for a long time too. I went around trying to find deals and watching YouTube videos...Jaline

Don't worry, mg. I harassed madirish everyday on AIM until I bought my Macbook.
Hmm...I guess I used him.
I feel bad now...

Done. Over. Finally.
Got the 2.2 Ghz Refurb for $1449. Couldn't resist that it was $500 less than i almost paid for it less than a week ago before the updates.
Honestly, the multi-touch doesn't thrill me that much. I'll be using it as a desktop most of the time anyways with mouse and keyboard and external monitor.
Now just hoping it ships to my by Friday!
- Good for you! That's probably the one I'll be upgrading to as well soon.rafalski
- mg330
Man, after placing an order at Apple, my credit card having issues FIVE TIMES for whatever reason, not buying a refurb today to have by Friday, I'm tempted to just go to the store and get the new 2.4 on Friday.
I was going to get the 2.4 refurb. It would be $1,787 with tax and shipping. The new one with a work discount and tax will be $2,004. Difference of $217.
So I ask you friends - this being my first Mac refurb or new one? I don't plan on buying a new computer for a while after this.
- rafalski0
It'll be easier for you if you assume
faster processor = more heat + less battery time.
Just don't check if it's true with these models, cause I don't really know :)It's the hard drive that slows modern computers down way more than a processor bump speeds them up. Even though it's not officially allowed on mb pros, I'd rather swap the HD for a 200GB 7200rpm DIY.
- mg330
Sorry for more questions, but 99% sure I'm going to get a refurb MBP.
In comparing the 2.2 vs. 2.4 Ghz, both come with 2 GB ram. If I were fine with a 120 GB hard drive, is it worth the extra $200 for the 2.4 to get a small processor increase, and the 256 MB video ram?
I'm figuring the 2.2 and max out the ram to 4 GB for around $100 at Crucial. I guess it's just cool to think I can now get the computer I almost bought a week ago for $500 less than that.

Shit. I just picked up the top level black MacBook (2.2GHz, 160GB) three days over a month ago. Anybody know anything about a "trade up" plan?
- lol, there is no trade up plan after that amount of time but if it does what you got it to do well than don't sweat the updatefreeskihp
- can you feel steve jobs's dick sliding in and out of your rectum?Llyod
- I wouldn't know what it's like to take it up the ass, Lloyd. Maybe you could enlighten us.underlow

when the f are they gonna put out new cinema displays? i've been waiting for a year with this piece of shit pink screen.......

I saw refurb ipods and macbooks - looked and worked like 100% new. The boxes they come in are grey though. Some say, you're less likely to get a dead pixel on a refurb, as they're well tested.
- i got a refurb that had about 10 dead pixels. apple replaced it no questions asked, but the replacement had a dead pixel as well.effort
- but, the only time i notice the dead px is when a DVD is firing up and the screen is 100% blackeffort
- otherwise it works like a charm and looked just like new -- gray box aside.effort

Let's talk about this for a moment:
I'm making the switch from a 2003 built 2.0 Ghz Celeron with 1 GB Ram that is slowly dying. I'd love to not spend a fortune on a new computer, new software, etc and am trying to stay around $2K - $2.5K total.
I used the current MBP's at the store and they were great, so fast. I'd be using this at home 85% of the time with an external keyboard and mouse.
The new specs are great. I get a discount through work, and with tax am looking at $2,004 for the low end MBP.
But with the prices on refurbs, and knowing the huge improvement that will be over my current comp., it almost seems like the right thing to do - get a refurb. Hell, I'd almost get an imac and a macbook for better portability.
I could save a ton by getting a refurb - who has them and what was the quality like when you received it? Did you feel like you were getitng a brand new computer?
- I've not tried the multi-touch yet. Is that worth it? Is it a great, breakthrough thing?mg33
- i have gotten 3 refurbs in the past and had 0 problems.....all of them were just like a brand new one.linearch
- ie. ipods must get new casings as they get new serial numbers which are engraved.rafalski
- what new parts come in refurb computers? Any?mg33
- they look and work 100% new, that's all we know. the rest is apple's secretrafalski
- do it. had my last iPod and it works fine. never heard anything bad. sometimes they come with more in it than describedpascii
