So... planning a trip to Canada... eh...
Need some ideas. Looking to be close to a major city, yet also close to some outdoor-ish stuff. It's a quasi family trip and they like to shop and hike.
Any thoughts before I do a more thorough search?

Montreal is a good place to visit, though I haven't had the chance to go there. Tons of stuff to do there.
But you can come visit us @ vancouver.
The shopping is alright. Tons of panhandlers and tree for an added scenic variety. There's lots of outdoors activities you can do here like hiking, snowboarding, mountain biking, kayaking etc... We got Whistler just around the block too which has some scenery and great snowboarding.czawada should be here typing in 5...4...3...2...1...
- Hahaha, I missed your little bit at the bottom there.

Banff is pretty nice place to check out. I was only there for a couple of days so I didn't get to do a whole lot but it was pretty snazzy.
- horton0
make vancouver your hub for daytrips into the mountains oceans and forests. no question.

Camping on Hornby (BC) Island is always a good time beaches a nice national park relaxed atmosphere
- eeew we did a trip to hornby this past summer and it was sardine camping.. i won't be going back for a while.horton
- Oh, well my buddy's family owns a place there so we camp down in the woods on their property so we don't have to share :PJKilla77
- share.JKilla77
- yeah people love that island for some reason.. although i am jealous that they have decent bike trails.horton
- Yeah that's something we never get around to doing. It must be done this summer though.JKilla77

I think Vancouver would be your best bet, but Ottawa is also good for outdoorsy type things. For the big cities (and not so much of the outside stuff, I'd say Toronto and Montreal). Both Vancouver and Ottawa have nice aspects of both things you are looking for, but Vancouver is larger.
- And no one really likes Ottawa anyway.JKilla77
- People actually travel to Ottawa? I thought it was just place to get gas and take piss on the way to Montreal.czawada
- Good call.JKilla77
- You can always find stuff to do here. People just don't know how to look around.Jaline
- Jkilla, have fun with your Olympics construction!Jaline
- I'll take Olympic construction over Ottawa any time, and that says a lot cuz I can't stand the Debtlympics.czawada
- Psssh their twining the highway to whistler. I only see positives here.JKilla77
- Agreed, and I don't drive downtown nor work near Cambie anymore so the construction doesn't affect me.czawada
- eh, whatever. I don't see a reason to make fun of Ottawa all the time.Jaline
- But I still hate the fuckin Debtlympics and do without it, wish we never won it.czawada
- Cuz you live there Jaline. Move away and then you'll see the humor.czawada
- I only hate Ottawa to balance out your love for it. I've watched a movie there once, at the time it was the biggest theater I had been too.JKilla77
- theater I had been too.JKilla77
- Well, you guys obviously have never spent a lot of time here.Jaline
- Also, I have to pimp it up because there are only like 2 people from Ottawa here.Jaline
- Just cuz I don't like it I must not have spent time there? Are you serious?czawada
- My Cousin lives in Ottawa, and my Dad grew up in Kemptville. So does that count?JKilla77
- No, read your second note and see if that makes sense.Jaline
- Right, sorry let me follow that note up with: and I've spent enough time there for business to know the city suz bawls.czawada
- Better?czawada
- People who say they hate Ottawa need better arguments against it.Jaline
- Anyway, it's your opinion. But I haven't found a good argument against the city yet from people at QBN.Jaline
- *Gives up.czawada

Ilaquit and Nunavut are real nice this time of year.
- New a guy who went up there to work. He was all into the out door scene. He came back with a kid.......JKilla77
- Hahaha, souvenir?czawada
- yeah real ICE...i had to say that srymolo
- Haha i would seem that way :PJKilla77
- hahaha i know a guy who went for work and came back with TWO kids and wife. seclusion never bothered him.molo

Sounds like you'd like it best in Vancouver rainman. Like horton said, make it your home base and go from there. Gulf Islands, North Shore Mountains, Whistler, and don't forget Vancouver itself!
- JKilla770
Halifax is pretty rad, or use to be pretty rad. All I hear now is that it's just getting worse and worse. Sigh that's what happens when there's not enough jobs to go around. :(
- Viva the "Square"JKilla77
- still is i think it's getting better personally but it definitly got to get it's shit together in some ways. that's my job i guess.molo
- uniac square? KFC won't deliver there.molo
- Ouch! Haha. Did you know they have a gang sign for the square now. WTF?JKilla77
- do you make a square with your fingers?molo
- Haha yeah man, saw in a classified video featuring a NS R&B singer guy.JKilla77
- probably jordan crouchermolo
- That's the one, and the square is made using both hands touching thumb to opposite index tipJKilla77

anyone else notice that these Canada threads always get orphaned and end-up becoming discussions amoungst ourselves?
- i want to know wats up with the canada threads period. i'm not going to mention that canada is cool anymore.molo
- Gabriola sux!czawada
- yes.Jaline
- And so does Ottawa, but apparently I have no reason to hate Ottawa!czawada
- totally. def nothing for vacationers to do out here. stay away.horton
- yes to Ottawa?Jaline
- ottawa sucks. i was there for like 2 hours but i can tell this sort of thing from a bus stop.molo
- haha, I never said for rainman to go there, because it's clearly not what he is looking for. I'm talking about hating the city in general.Jaline
- general.Jaline
- I'm sure, molo...Jaline
- When Jaline posts something this is how I picture it sounding: http://www.youtube.c…czawada
- Seriously, if you can't find anything to do in Ottawa then it's your own problem.Jaline
- There are things to do in every city, in every corner of the world, that's not the point.czawada
- Well, I'm responding to those ppl who keep saying it's "boring".Jaline
- Personally, I think Vancouver is kind of a crappy city too, but I live here for what surrounds it. But it's still better than Ottawa.czawada
- You guys haven't stated your point yet either. You just keep saying that it sucks. Which is not an argument.Jaline

Vancover sounds like a good place to start.
My dad is from Edmenton, Alberta Canada and made a trip up there when I was much younger. They talked about how clean it was.
I'm partial to the bigger cities... not much of a hiker (I get winded going up my stairs)... so the city/country ration has got to be more 60-40 or 70-30.
We'll be flying up so the closer we are to a city, the better... don't want to be driving a ton in a rental.
Thanks for the inputs.

Ah now it all makes sense, haha.

I actually calculated a vacation on Canada once - just the camping prices would get you 200 years of medical aid in Verona.

I actually calculated a vacation in Canada once - just the camping prices alone would get you 103 years of medical aid in Verona.

Forget cities, you want to go up north, way up north such as Dawson City, Yukon.
