In my effort to become employed in Nth America [hail from Sydney] I have to provide my 'salary expectations' to prospects. Cities I may be employed include Bay area, LA, NYC, Austin TX, Chi-town.
I have 5 years interactive design experience in design studios, ad agencies and running my own business. More of a art direction - visual/flash designer with coding skills than vice versa.
I have searched krop jobs and craigslist as research on salaries and was hoping to gain even more numbers from creatives on here in these respective cities to prepare my applications.
any advises will be much appreciated

what's sad is I thought the same. I thought there was a hit out on k0na or something, which wouldn't surprise me.

5 years is substantial, but not huge. what percentage would you say has been more AD vs. designer?
the cities you specified are expensive (as if you didn't know that already), so I would say you could look at anywhere from $60-90K given your experience as a very rough estimate.
your portfolio, the place you are interviewing at and the position you are applying for will all be factors though. good luck.

dont listen to him. ask for $180,000. anyone can do it.

my advises would be to ask for 90k, and be willing to accept 70

I think I'm just scared of Texas, so I have no reason why anyone would ever move there. One of my good friends is moving to Austin I think. Or some other place in Texas.
I have a lay over there in a few weeks (Dallas) and I tried to get my travel agent to route the flight through another airport, haha.
- Basically I clump all of Texas together in one big ball of hatred. Each city is one and the same to me.flavorful
- i do the same! i tend to think everyone there drives a hummer/is fat/talks too loud/ and has a horrid southern drawl. i am horrible :\lvl_13
- ...drawl. i am horrible and really just need to go there and check it out :\lvl_13
- As a Canadian, I don't think I could survive in Texas...Jaline
- NEVER lump all TEXANS in one group! Texas metros have diverse populations while the smaller cities (less than 250K) are generally full of good-natured people who are more than willing to help a brotha' out.amullins

Hey mate, I would look into the AIGA for reference. AIGA is a graphic design association ( club for cool kids ). In America its a pretty big deal, the best part is they monitor salary averages based on location in the nation. All the information I believe is from its members and really give a nice set of standards where to start.
Check out www.aiga.org you might be able to search for the PDF with out joining, but I suggest joining because I have made a lot of great contacts in the field and its a great place to discuss design.

Found the link already of the PDF for the salary survey.

The fact that you are an AD who knows Flash and knows how to code already puts you in the top echelon. Like threadpost said, ask for something high but be willing to accept something lower. NYC and LA would be your best bet for the highest salary plus if it doesn't pan out at that company then there's always another studio around the corner. As far as what to ask, depends on what city you're in, what company its for, and especially...who ya know.
