will I run into any problems using an external 320gb fat32 harddrive on my mac and pc?
as far as i understand, thats the only fileformat i could use to do so, right?is performance an issue? any experience?

there are a few drivers that let you write to ntfs on os x, paragon makes one and there is also a free one. i usually mount it over the network and just use samba so it isn't an issue, but that's probably too slow for you, especially if you don't have gigabit ethernet.
also, one thing to note is that a file can't be larger than 4gb in FAT32

Yea, 4gb limit and spotlight won't work on your FAT32 drive too. Mounting over a network is a nice idea as long as you have a fast network. I wouldn't use the windows hfs driver personally, just wouldn't trust it myself.

The 4gb file size limit isn't that bad.. there arn't many files you come across that big... also, you can still search on FAT32 drives, it just isn't quite as fast...

You "could" set it up as NTFS and just install
MacFuse: http://code.google.com/p/macfuse…
and the NTFS-3G package: http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/
That'll make it read/write for your mac and it'll be native on your Windows side.
