Before going to see Apple, just take out the RAM and put in the old one.

a friend of mine has a macbookpro. he bought 2 gbs of RAM off of crucial. he started having problems with his mac later on and apple would not honor his applecare because he had aftermarket RAM.

I was actually told by one of the retail sales knobs at the Mac store in Toronto that applecare would be canceled if I didn't use Mac Ram. I then spoke to her manager and found that to be utter horsesh*t.
Mac Ram is a rip off and only gives you about 7% more operating efficiency. Totally not worth the cost.

I got my 4 gigs from OWC. and I love it. It seems to go lower by each week. Hesh.

yo ev, if the ram was the correct specs, then are you sure you put it in properly? all the way? cuz i had some kingston on a 3yr old pb g4 and it was fine...till it got stolen (but thats a diff story). If it's not well placed, it will cause all sorts of problems: kernel panics/crashing, failure to boot, weird sounds... etc etc etc

http://crucial.com/ is the only place you need to go. Good ram and great prices straight from the source.

Well to be honest I have given up on this computer anyway...its shat the bed a while ago...its over 3 years old...HD crapped out and had to be replaced twice and the DVD drive hasnt been working all year...I am just going to get a new one when the redesign and issue them with penryn...Not dissing the computer though cos I have used it practically every day for the last 3 years so its been good to me...but its time to put her to bed...Nice to know i wont need to shell out for apple RAM in the future though...i guess I should have done my homework properly...

of course you then have to work out what spec the RAM you have is.. is it listed on the receipt?
- ribit0
You might want to go to http://www.crucial.com
and use their RAM configurator to check the spec you should have for your machine...and check that against Apple's specs as well... just so you are sure what the spec is.
- that ram configuraot is awesome, makes it so simple.mrdobolina
- agreed to thatlajj

You don't need to reinstall OSX if it isn't starting btw , there are other things you can do first...
There's lots of diagnostics you can run, like this:

Did the Genius Bar guys say how they worked out the RAM was bad? If the RAM was to Apple spec, and it doesn't work, you should get it exchanged by the manufacturer and try again.
- ev0
Well actually I was told it was the problem at the genius bar in the apple store in Osaka...So i suppose I just believed them...but ever since I took the RAM out I have had no problem at all...Like the computer would crash, say when I was installing a proper program with an installer, then Id restart and OS X wouldn't boot up...so I would have to reinstall OS X...thats basically what was happening...
- ribit0
why did you 'have to reinstall OSX'? How did you work out the RAM was at fault? (have you run the Apple Hardware test? If not, how you are diagnosing the RAM as the problem?)
- ribit0
the only important thing is the spec... doesn't matter who makes it. If you follow the Apple specification for the RAM you should be OK... Most good RAM makers give a lifetime guarantee, so if you run the Apple Hardware test (on the install DVD or get it seperately) and it fails, get it exchanged.

I have a Powerbook G4 and I bought 1GB of Kingston RAM last year...however it didnt get on with my laptop at all...Everytime I installed a new program the bloody thing would crash and Id have to reinstall OS X...I didnt realise it was the non-apple RAM until Id had to reinstall OS X twice...is there something I am doing wrong here? As I type this the RAM is in a drawer in my desk cos I just got sick of having to take it out everytime I wanted to install a program...
from my experience I would say dont waste your money on non apple RAM cos its more hassle than its worth...but has this changed since mac went intel?
- this sounds like a different problem then just the difference between apple and non apple ram

Chip Merchant has the 2GB modules for $50.82/ea. I've been using these guys for years. Seems better than paying $1000 from Apple, damn.
