so say i want a new imac
why the fuck are apple charging $850 for the 4GB sticks when crucial (and presumably elsewhere) have them for $149?
I realise ram direct from apple is pricey but this is horseshit.

Welcome to the Pleasure Dome...
Seriously though, NEVER buy RAM from Apple. Bad bad bad.
Like you said, Crucial have the same thing much cheaper...
PS. Apple computers are PCs. And they now run Windows. I can't see why people still by these ugly Windows-native boxes... but hey, that's my common sense taking over again.

yeap I have never stuffed a new mac with ram direct from the apple store, and that pattern won't change this time. I'm just stunned at the markup.

ill repeat the obvious
welcome to apple, never buy ram from them

big news! yeah it's always been like that. just get it from somewhere else. crucial, kingston are sure shot. as long as they have lifetime warranty (which most do) then you're good to go. check out newegg.com they have good prices usually. just make sure you get the correct ram module!!

Crucial is definitely the way to go since they make it so easy to find your Mac model and what RAM it runs on. I just got 4 gigs for my MBP for $160. The exact same RAM, spec-for-spec.

either way, i heard that all the ram comes from only a few makers and then other companies (like crucial, kingston etc) brand them in their own...just like current point n shoot image processors... so the only major difference is in price.

what PC manufacturer doesn't jack up the price for extra RAM? Apple is not special in this regard.

If you live in Canada, check out http://canadaram.com/
That's where I got mine (although I never actually used it because Apple sent me extra RAM instead of the extra HD I asked for).

Chip Merchant has the 2GB modules for $50.82/ea. I've been using these guys for years. Seems better than paying $1000 from Apple, damn.

I have a Powerbook G4 and I bought 1GB of Kingston RAM last year...however it didnt get on with my laptop at all...Everytime I installed a new program the bloody thing would crash and Id have to reinstall OS X...I didnt realise it was the non-apple RAM until Id had to reinstall OS X twice...is there something I am doing wrong here? As I type this the RAM is in a drawer in my desk cos I just got sick of having to take it out everytime I wanted to install a program...
from my experience I would say dont waste your money on non apple RAM cos its more hassle than its worth...but has this changed since mac went intel?
- this sounds like a different problem then just the difference between apple and non apple ram

the only important thing is the spec... doesn't matter who makes it. If you follow the Apple specification for the RAM you should be OK... Most good RAM makers give a lifetime guarantee, so if you run the Apple Hardware test (on the install DVD or get it seperately) and it fails, get it exchanged.

why did you 'have to reinstall OSX'? How did you work out the RAM was at fault? (have you run the Apple Hardware test? If not, how you are diagnosing the RAM as the problem?)
