I think honestly this film has hinged entirely on its casting. If not for Day-Lewis, it might have just collapsed under the concept.
I think those for whom it's struck a chord are genuinely into it. It's not like millions of people have even seen the film. It's been in domestic theaters for 10 weeks and made about 37 mil. "Step Up 2 Da Streets" or whatever has been out for 2 weeks and made 48 mil.
Whether or not people liked TWWB isn't so much the point as is people are talking about it. A piece of art is buzzing about the culture. That's a groovy thing. Hey, "Juno" has a shitload of hype, and you're 'suppose' to like, and it really didn't move me that much.
But, I am psyched to see small indie and character films grab attention.
I've met almost no one who saw TWBB who didn't like it, but that is more becasue THEY were the target audience for this, I suspect. When I came out of the theater there was one dude behind me bitching about how it sucked and it was "just an excuse for that dick to overact for three hours." So there you go.Anyway, what's it like in Hartford, kerus? Shitty down here right in New Haven.

Did you know that Daniel Plainview is supposed to be Rockefeller?
- Wouldn't he have been Plainview's competitor as founder of Standard Oil?harlequino

I completely agree with you, harle.
I went on the IMDb forums for the film, and they were ripped apart females under 18 who rated the film and didn't like it. Many of them do have horrible taste in films, but you could make a case to say the same thing about guys under 18. Anyway, as you said, they are not the target audience.

- yeah, exactly. My sister saw that film and loved it. I would see it just for the dancing, but wouldn't pay money.Jaline

There Will Be Blood is one of the best movies made in a long time and will prove to be timeless. The story is a simple examination of one man's life. The first twenty minutes tell you all you need to know about what tough, determined bastard the guy is without saying a word. I don't see what could be considered wrong with the ending. It felt inevitable to me. When Daniel yells "I'm finished!" I got chills. Perfect really.
No Country For Old Men was a top-notch thriller with a little bit of obtuse pseudo-philosophy sprinkled in from the book. I enjoyed it, but it was still just a violent thriller with a very bleak message.
The fact these two movies were put head to head after being filmed in the same tiny town around the same time is just a terrible coincidence. They really have nothing else in common.
- I didn't know it was the ending until he said, "I'm finished". Good way to go out. Less surprising than NCFOM.Jaline

Films like TWBB are bringing me back to the theaters.

I loved the last scene, I was shouting about drinking my friends milkshakes for a while afterward.
Definitely one of the best films I've seen in ages. The spiral of the main character is nothing short of mesmerising and the opening, speech free 15 minutes is a fantastic way to start the whole thing.
- The last scene I feel is an all time masterpiece - humour, drama, death...babaganush

Also when he has a pop at the churchman the first time around... Too funny.
