Glad to hear your opinion reciprocated - it's been that long since I've watched a decent, non-trash movie, that I wondered whether I'd just got caught up in the moment - that simply not having blunt answers was art enough to cosset me.
I was quite looking forward to having it rattle around my head for a wee while yet ... but I got quite pissed afterwards, so now my memory's all jumbled. Perhaps I'll just have to got see it again soon.

Seeing it this weekend. Finally crawled on to Jersey screens today. Really looking forward to it. PT Anderson hasn't put a foot wrong yet. The guy is a genuine original.

the film is great, i think the trailer gives abit too much away. but its worth seeing. great score and great acting and cinematography.
the SNL skit for 'i drink your milkshake' was hilarious.

To me this is an INSTANT classic (and I seriously am not into the gushing hype type of response). It will live for a long time, cinematically I think it's crazy that it didn't win best film and director ( I love No country also...) but I feel this film will endure and be recognised as a land mark film.
The final scene is just absolute perfection. Humour, brutality, pity, incongrous juxtaposition.
Awesome.
- I think No Country had more hype surrounding it after. But maybe it's just where I live...

the first 30 minutes will go down in cinema history, the ending was lame, but then again it was a based on work by upton sinclair and that's where the challenge lies...
- lame!?kelpie
- lame ending? wtf?colin_s
- I wouldn't say the ending is "lame", but you have every right to believe that. It wasn't up to par for me either.Jaline
- That being said, I think it's better when I think about the rest of the film more. But sometimes you just want to like it.Jaline
- it right away, without having to think about it. Why do all these films always need you to do homework?Jaline

Yeah, great film. Slightly spoilt by Kelpie declaring it as one of the 3 most important films in cinematic history (wtf?)
However i thought No Country for Old Men was a superior film. It's "message", so bleak and nihilistic, resonated with me more.
Also Daniel Day Lewis' performance was so cartoony verging on hamfisted. In his next film, he's in danger of becoming a parody of himself.
He should check out Tommy Lee Jones in No Country. for a masterclass in understated acting excellence.
- I said top 5 potentialy, and I stand by it. Superior to No Country easily...kelpie
- ... with a far deeper resonance to me. Opinions eh? everybody's got emkelpie
- Oh right, yeah, top 5. When i sat down, i had top 3 in my head for some reason.. I was like, "we'll see about that!"Khurram
- What was the resonance tho? Let's discuss this...Khurram
- I'd love to, really, but maybe a bit later in the day. very busy just nowkelpie
- I will say though, that I also think NCFOM is a brilliant film also.kelpie

you shouldn't drink so much ;)
lemme know when you want me to help you out with your garden. Can't do this weekend, but after should be fine.

Well you can't deny what a masterful piece of filmmaking it was/is. From the opening 30 minutes to the final scene.
Way my preferences fall down tho, is that ultimately Cormac McCarthy is a better writer than Upton Sinclair. And that it's the actual story of No Coutry i prefer, rather than the cinematic experience.
I don't know, something about Sinclair's satire on the corruptive powers of greed - seems played. From Mr Burns to a million other popular characters like that. Whereas they way i think, right now, i think people who are driven are HEROIC.
Also the characters disintegration. He was never motivated by money. He was motivated by ambition, personal power, a desire to get one over the massive coorporations who were trying to stifle him - triumph of the will... hehe. I'm a fascist, yeah i know, so i didn't buy the films "social commentary". This whole, "whatever happened to the simple values? Of love, and family, and community..." bleurgh.
But then that's just to focus on the negative. There's far more here than that.. but when i saw No Country, i was lke, fuck! That's the best film i seen for YEARS. I had a slightly stoned dream about it, and it was in me head for a week!

Having seen both now I think I preferred There Will Be Blood though both are majestic movies. Day Lewis's performance is outstanding and does make the film for me. I loved the story and found it less obtuse than No Country. I haven't read either Sinclair or Cormac McCarthy but I will make the effort now. Incidentally Tommy Lee Jones gave a very convincing performance in The Valley of Elah as well.

Absolutely agree. Can't see the Day-Lewis parody thing. Two awesome films but There will be Blood dominates in cinematic terms for me.

CALLES, Paul and Eli are twin brothers. I know because I read that they were cast as different actors at first, but then they decided to go with one actor and make the two characters twins. I was confused about that too.

To me, There Will Be Blood is better than No Country For Old Men. While I liked both, TWBB kept me interested the entire time. I have to say though...I love character development so much but the endings of these films don't really do it for me. I liked them enough, but I feel like there could've been something more to them. That being said, TWBB had a better ending, in my opinion. But I think more loose ends were tied up in NCFOM, so I'm on the fence about the endings.
I've seen Daniel Day-Lewis in various films, and what amazes me about him is how different each character seems to be. Maybe I just watch too many indie films with him in them, but he's very underrated. I'm glad he won the Oscar now that I have actually seen this film too.
- I forgot to mention that his son, H.W. or whatever, was hawt when he was older. Daniel Day-Lewis is pretty hot himself.Jaline

"He lived apart from his wife Rebecca Miller while she was directing him in The Ballad of Jack and Rose. This is in keeping with his habit of being isolated while in character and shooting a film, which is in part the reason he is hesitant to take more film work."
cute!

75% of ppl who say they like this film are only doing so because they're "supposed" to like it.

^no, not even remotely.
