How important is the location of a studio these days? I'd imagine because of that new fangled interweb thingamagig, it'd be pretty damn irrelivent?

as if you were to start up a studio? or if you were looking for a new job/location?

Depends what you do, but unless you're servicing the extreme end of web-only, I'd say it's important.
I've got something in mind which, essentially, I could do anywhere - but practically, in terms of client-generation and networking, I can't imagine leaving London for, even if it will make it ridiculously more expensive than doing the same thing out of town. Even out of centre.

having a design-shop might be relevant to attract simpler/faster gigs, maintaining hi-standard graphic work.
just a crazy thought.

as long as you have macs you'll be fine

If you operate in a distinct milieu* I don't suppose it matters too much - marketed well, people will be able to find you.
If you're actively seeking contracts though, I'd say proximity matters.

Perfect, we were going to get macs! It's all gonna work. I can see it already.
But yea. A startup kinda thing.

Space is what you make it, but accessibility and visitor comfort is key
so maybe a huge warehouse studio full of equipment where no one would park is just as bad as a room the size of a cardboard box and a laptop in the nicest building downtown.
find a middle ground that works for you AND your perspective clientel

you can always sell dolls.
sell dolls...
'sell dolls' - can you really pronounce 'sell dolls' without swallowing your own tongue?

Make sure you have some capital for travel, as you will be doing quite a bit to win some new steady clients or vendor who want to outsource to you.
Doing the work may not be affected by geographic location, but new business will.

Well it's actually a rather industrial area with very little competition. I don't know if thats a good or bad thing but its pretty much a town thats a 30-45 minutes drive from three cities...

That might work just fine then. We assumed you were moving to Tatooine. :)

Well, there are a few smaller agencies but half of them don't even have websites! WTF?
Oh and a few smaller known ones too.. you know... like oh, The Designers Republic
